Independent game publisher, Yotsuba Interactive, has signed Escape The Baby Alarm, a point-and-click puzzle game from Aarhus-based Danish developer, Julie Normann Bjørnskov, that turns the experience of new parenthood into a series of surreal, escape room-inspired challenges.
A playable demo is available on Steam.
Parenthood as gameplay
Escape The Baby Alarm draws directly from Bjørnskov’s own experience as a new parent, reshaping sleep deprivation, cold coffee and questionable hygiene into gameplay described as calm, intriguing and slightly offbeat.
Players navigate scenarios that range from searching for shoes in the fridge to avoiding getting sunscreen on a toothbrush and smashing a box of chocolates in what the game frames as exhaustion-fuelled frustration.
The puzzles are designed to test both practical logic and emotional awareness. Some challenges call for conventional problem-solving, while others ask players to stop trying to fix things entirely and instead step back – reflecting a central theme about relinquishing control amid the disorder of early parenthood.
A surrealist take on sleep deprivation
Visually, the game uses a bright pop art aesthetic that Bjørnskov has chosen to mirror the dream-like state that accompanies sustained sleep deprivation. The surrealist art style sits in deliberate contrast with the grounded emotional themes running through the gameplay.
The narrative follows the process of identity change that comes with becoming a parent – letting go of a former self and adjusting to a new, more exhausted but more resilient version. Beneath the puzzles and the humour, the game’s underlying message is a simple one: that new parents are doing enough, even when it does not feel that way.
From maternity leave to game development
Bjørnskov has a background in interactive design, with creative work spanning illustration, animation, sound, music, graphic design and game development.
She began making games after returning from maternity leave, initially developing titles for the Playdate handheld console. Her debut Playdate title was staff-picked in the Playdate store and featured in the Wholesome Direct showcase, and it received the Leap of Faith game award.
Escape The Baby Alarm represents her first title to be signed by an external publisher. The game is a single-player experience and will be available on Steam, though a release date and price have not yet been confirmed.
