Watch Out for Charity Scams This Giving Season, Government Warns

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) has issued a warning to Australians this festive season to remain cautious about charity scams. With the holiday period often inspiring generosity, scammers are taking advantage of the public’s goodwill to solicit fake donations.

ACNC Commissioner Sue Woodward AM emphasised the importance of verifying the legitimacy of charities before donating.

“Financial losses are significant. Scamwatch calculates there has been more than a million dollars lost to reported fake charity scams over the past five years, and that’s only what is officially reported,” Woodward said.

Steps to Protect Your Donations

The ACNC advises Australians to take a moment before responding to donation requests from texts, emails, or phone calls. Woodward recommended avoiding sharing personal or banking details with unknown callers or through unsolicited links.

“Pause for a moment. Don’t click on the link, don’t give your banking details, and don’t say your name,” she said. “Instead, go to the ACNC Charity Register on your phone or computer. Check if it’s a real, registered charity.”

The Charity Register provides verified information about organisations, including their websites and contact details. By clicking through to a charity’s website via the Register, donors can ensure they are supporting a legitimate organisation.

Supporting Genuine Causes

The ACNC’s advice comes as Australian charities work hard to provide essential support to communities during challenging times, including cost-of-living pressures. Woodward highlighted the crucial role of charities during the festive season and how donations can make a significant difference.

“Australian charities are working hard to support people in our community who face hardship,” she said. “The Register allows you to look up the kind of charity you would like to support, whether it’s those running food programs or ones operating in your local area or anywhere in Australia.”

The ACNC supports GivingTuesday, a global movement encouraging generosity. Woodward reiterated the importance of ensuring donations go to genuine charities.

“The sector really depends on our generosity to provide people with shelter, food parcels, a festive meal, and so much more. We encourage everyone to be generous, but please do a quick check on the Charity Register before you donate,” she said.

Tips to Avoid Charity Scams

The ACNC recommends the following steps before making a donation:

  • Look up a charity’s contact details on the ACNC Charity Register.

  • Use the Register to navigate to the charity’s official website and find out how to donate directly.

  • Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited text messages, social media posts, or emails.

  • Do not share personal or banking details with unknown callers or through unverified channels.

Scamwatch, led by the National Anti-Scam Centre, also offers guidance on avoiding scams. The ACNC oversees more than 60,000 charities listed on the Charity Register, ensuring transparency and accountability within the sector.

By taking precautions and using trusted resources like the Charity Register, Australians can confidently support genuine charities and help make a difference during the festive season.
