Visa has launched Visa Destinations, a mobile-first travel platform available to Visa cardholders across 10 locations worldwide, as the payments company moves to position itself as more than a transaction processor in the growing travel economy.

The platform is live in Paris, London, Dubai, Milan, Rome, Mexico City, New York City, Miami, San Francisco and Thailand, with more destinations expected to be added later this year.

Beyond Payments

The launch represents a strategic shift for Visa, which is seeking to insert itself into the travel experience well before and after the point of purchase. Rather than functioning solely as a payment network, Visa Destinations is designed to help cardholders discover, plan and experience trips through curated recommendations organised around travel interests such as food, fashion, sports and culture.

Katya Petelina, Head of Global Cross-Border and Global Sales and Commercial Operations at Visa, pointed to the resilience of consumer travel spending as a driver behind the move.

“Travel is expected to grow 10 per cent annually over the coming years. It consistently shows resilience to the world’s events and consumers protect it,” Petelina explained. “Our latest Visa Global Travel Intentions Study indicates customers will cut back on everyday spending to save for planned travel.”

“With Visa Destinations, we are accompanying travellers throughout their journey and helping them discover the moments that make a destination memorable, while giving our issuers and merchant partners a meaningful way to participate in the economic growth that travel creates.”

Visa’s own research suggests a shift in what motivates travellers. According to the company’s Global Travel Intentions Study, four in 10 American travellers made a trip in 2025 specifically to experience music, sports or art festivals, with cultural events acting as draw cards for international visitors.

What The Platform Offers

Visa Destinations provides cardholders with city guides, tastemaker recommendations and curated offerings across dining, entertainment, culture, hospitality, wellness, shopping and transport.

Among the specific experiences highlighted at launch are priority access to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Louvre in Paris, alongside dining experiences recommended by local tastemakers.

Premium cardholders, including those with Visa Infinite and Visa Signature products, receive enhanced benefits and tailored travel experiences through the platform.

The platform is exclusive to Visa cardholders and built around a mobile-first design, reflecting the broader industry trend toward smartphone-driven trip planning and booking.

Anchor Partnerships

Visa has signed global anchor partners across the financial and travel sectors to support the platform. These include financial institution Santander Group, tax-free shopping provider Global Blue, airline alliance Star Alliance and online travel company Trip.com Group.

Santander is promoting Visa Destinations to its customers across 10 markets.

Matías Sánchez, Global Head of Cards and Digital Solutions at Santander, described the partnership as a way to connect customers with experiences across music, sports, fashion, gastronomy and culture.

“At Santander, we believe travel is about creating meaningful memories and discovering unique experiences that connect people with destinations,” Sánchez noted. “Through our partnership with Visa, we are bringing exclusive opportunities to our customers across ten key markets.”

Global Blue is integrating its tax-free shopping services into the platform, giving international travellers access to refund processes and purchasing benefits.

Virginie Alem, Chief Marketing Officer at Global Blue, commented that the partnership brings “the value of the tax-free shopping experience to travellers using Visa Destinations,” with international travellers benefiting from “increased purchasing power, a seamless and guaranteed refund process, and an enhanced shopping journey.”

Star Alliance, which operates across 26 member airlines, is contributing connectivity and reach to the platform.

Renato Ramos, Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Star Alliance, highlighted the alliance’s network as a complement to Visa’s platform. “This partnership with Visa will deliver value to travellers through exclusive experiences that will make every journey more memorable,” Ramos added.

Trip.com Group rounds out the anchor partner lineup, contributing travel booking and planning capabilities.

Sun Bo, Chief Marketing Officer at Trip.com Group, framed the collaboration as combining “secure payments with curated travel offerings and elevated benefits.”

A Play For The Experience Economy

The launch of Visa Destinations fits within a broader industry trend of payments companies seeking to expand their role in the customer journey beyond the transaction itself.

For Visa, the platform also supports its wider commercial strategy around digital commerce and cross-border payments. By connecting cardholders with travel-related merchants and experiences, the company creates new touchpoints that reinforce card usage abroad while giving travel businesses a channel to reach high-spending international visitors.

The 10 per cent annual growth forecast for travel spending, which Visa attributes to research from Boston Consulting Group, underscores why the payments company is investing in the category. Cross-border transactions – which carry higher interchange fees than domestic payments – remain a significant revenue driver for card networks, and travel is one of the largest generators of cross-border spend.

Whether Visa Destinations gains traction as a travel planning tool in a market already crowded with booking platforms, review sites and social media recommendations will depend on the quality and exclusivity of the experiences it offers and how effectively it integrates into the pre-trip planning behaviour of cardholders.

The platform is available now across its 10 launch locations, with expansion to further destinations planned for the remainder of the year.
