Turnitin Embeds Feedback Studio Directly Into Google Classroom As AI-Written Essay Submissions Surge Fivefold

Turnitin has launched an integration with Google Workspace for Education that brings its Feedback Studio tools directly into Google Classroom, giving educators a single workflow for integrity checks, AI writing detection, personalised feedback and grading without leaving the platform they already use.

The integration arrives as the proportion of essays submitted to Turnitin products that are largely machine-written has jumped fivefold in three years. Between October 2025 and February 2026, approximately 15 per cent of English language submissions had more than 80 per cent AI-generated writing, up from an average of 3 per cent in 2023.

A separate 2026 study from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) found that 94 per cent of students are now using generative AI on assessed work, increasing the need for transparent evaluation systems and reliable AI grader tools in education.

From detection to visibility

The integration goes beyond flagging AI-generated content. It introduces new assignment types, including a Turnitin Clarity writing space where students draft alongside an AI assistant that operates within built-in limits. The system records every step of the writing process, turning what would otherwise be an opaque submission into a visible trail that educators can review.

The intent is to shift the dynamic from educators trying to determine whether AI was used after the fact, to giving them real-time visibility into how students are engaging with AI tools throughout the drafting process.

For students, the model is designed to support learning how to use AI tools in a way that is transparent and considered, rather than as a shortcut to a finished product.

A single workflow for educators

The integration allows instructors to enable Turnitin integrity checks on Google Classroom assignments, share targeted feedback and grade student work using Feedback Studio, all from within Google Classroom. Grades pass back automatically from Turnitin Feedback Studio to Google Classroom, and student data synchronises in real time.

Institutions with a Turnitin Originality licence can access AI writing indication features, which provide insights into the extent of AI-generated content in submissions.

The new assignment types available through the integration include a Standard Assignment and a Student Writing assignment powered by Turnitin Clarity. The latter provides the composition space with an AI chat function that operates within guardrails, while giving educators full visibility into the complete writing process.

Addressing a rapidly shifting landscape

The scale of AI use in student work has accelerated quickly. Turnitin’s data shows that the average rate of heavily AI-generated submissions rose from 3.3 per cent of English language submissions between April and August 2023 to 14.8 per cent between October 2025 and February 2026. In both cases, the measure captures submissions where 80 per cent or more of the content was identified as AI-generated.

The HEPI data paints a similar picture, with near-universal adoption of generative AI tools among students working on graded assessments.

These trends have placed growing pressure on educational institutions to move beyond simple detection and toward frameworks that acknowledge AI as a tool students will use, while ensuring that critical thinking, writing skills and academic integrity remain central to assessment.

Availability and requirements

The integration is available globally, following a closed beta phase. Institutions need a Google Workspace for Education Plus licence to access Classroom add-ons. Turnitin Clarity requires a separate licence.

Turnitin will demonstrate the integration at ISTE 2026 in Orlando at booth 1158. Turnitin Clarity has received the ISTE Seal designation for education technology.
