Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
Splunk, a leader in cybersecurity and observability, has announced key updates to its observability portfolio, aimed at providing organisations with more comprehensive visibility and actionable insights. These advancements seek to address common challenges faced by ITOps and engineering teams, including fragmented visibility across tech stacks and a lack of context in performance issues impacting business functions.
With these updates, Splunk aims to enable smarter insights and enhanced automation, offering teams a clearer view into Kubernetes environments and a unified user experience across its observability suite. Organisations now have access to richer insights for monitoring and quickly resolving issues, such as disruptions in user transactions or supply chain outages, enhancing their digital resilience.
Adding Business Context to Observability
Patrick Lin, SVP and GM of Observability at Splunk, emphasised the importance of business context in achieving effective observability. “To help overcome scattered visibility and blind spots in hybrid and modern environments, injecting the right business and user context is key,” Lin said. “Our observability portfolio, now supercharged by AppDynamics, provides customers with the business context needed to understand how a problem originated and who or what is impacted. We also offer broad coverage so customers can standardise their observability practices within a single solution.”
The addition of Cisco AppDynamics to the Splunk Observability portfolio, now branded as Splunk AppDynamics, has introduced a more integrated full-stack observability experience. This integration delivers broader coverage across traditional three-tier and microservices environments, providing organisations with unified visibility across diverse IT environments.
Key Enhancements to Splunk’s Observability Suite
Since launching the integrated observability experience at Cisco Live Las Vegas, Splunk has introduced several new features:
- Enhanced Integration and User Experience: Splunk has improved the integration of Splunk AppDynamics SaaS with the broader observability portfolio, offering a smoother user experience and actionable insights to streamline troubleshooting. Key features include:
- Single Sign-On (SSO) and Deep Linking between Splunk Cloud and Splunk AppDynamics, now generally available, which helps improve operational efficiency by streamlining troubleshooting workflows.
- An enhanced user interface that provides a consistent look and feel across Splunk AppDynamics and Splunk Observability Cloud, offering a cohesive troubleshooting experience.
- Log Observer Connect for Splunk AppDynamics, also now generally available, which bridges dashboards and visualisations in Splunk AppDynamics with relevant logs in the Splunk Platform, allowing for quicker troubleshooting across on-premises and hybrid environments.
- Single Sign-On (SSO) and Deep Linking between Splunk Cloud and Splunk AppDynamics, now generally available, which helps improve operational efficiency by streamlining troubleshooting workflows.
Reducing Troubleshooting Workload with Automation
Splunk’s updates also focus on automation to reduce the manual effort required in problem identification and resolution, helping teams detect and resolve issues faster. These innovations are expected to lower mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to resolve (MTTR) for performance issues across various environments.
- Ai-Driven Tag Spotlight: The Tag Spotlight feature has received updates that enhance its ability to identify common issues across applications and user experiences, facilitating faster incident resolution.
- Kubernetes Proactive Troubleshooting: A new feature for infrastructure monitoring, Kubernetes Proactive Troubleshooting, offers teams improved drill-down capabilities, simplified navigation, and updated list views for the Kubernetes navigator. This feature supports faster MTTR and optimal performance in Kubernetes environments.
Supporting Industry Views
Stephen Elliot, Group Vice President & Analyst at IDC, spoke to the value of the integrated experience Splunk provides. “Cisco and Splunk have rationalised the observability portfolio. Customers can strengthen their digital resilience with a unified experience that gives them visibility and business insights across any environment,” Elliot said.
Ed Hubbard, Director of Site Reliability and Monitoring at Travelport, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of observability for operational responsiveness. “As a global company, it’s essential to act and respond to incidents quickly and reduce downtime. With observability, we can achieve richer visibility into our network, infrastructure, and critical applications at every touchpoint,” Hubbard said.
