The European Commission has selected the SpaceRISE consortium to build and manage IRIS², a multi-orbit satellite constellation designed to strengthen Europe’s communications infrastructure. Comprised of key players like Eutelsat, Hispasat, and SES, alongside other significant partners, SpaceRISE aims to deliver a robust, low-latency system that addresses Europe’s connectivity and security needs.

The IRIS² initiative, positioned as a crucial element in bolstering Europe’s autonomy and digital resilience, is anticipated to be fully operational by the early 2030s. The system will serve all EU Member States, bridging connectivity gaps while safeguarding essential infrastructure.

The programme, a public-private partnership, will be funded through a combination of EU, European Space Agency, and private contributions from the consortium’s satellite operators.

A Step Forward for Europe’s Digital Sovereignty

IRIS², Europe’s latest multi-orbit project, represents a major stride toward reinforcing digital sovereignty and connectivity. The multi-orbit system promises secure, adaptable communication solutions, ensuring Europe’s capability to respond to emerging challenges.

Eva Berneke, Chief Executive Officer of Eutelsat, outlined the project’s importance. “The IRIS² programme is a strong step forward in Eutelsat’s efforts to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty. By investing in multi-orbit technology, we are supporting Europe’s strategic needs. Our collaboration with SpaceRISE aligns us with the EU’s mission, delivering a resilient, forward-looking communication system that addresses critical connectivity needs while creating value for Eutelsat and its stakeholders,” she said.

Miguel Ángel Panduro, Chief Executive Officer of Hispasat, described the project as a defining moment for European satellite communications. “IRIS² embodies a sovereign and secure communications system supported by European innovation. The companies within SpaceRISE are committed to meeting the EU’s connectivity demands. This award marks an important beginning in shaping the future of Europe’s satellite communications,” he stated.

The Role of SES and Multi-Orbit Network Development

Adel Al-Saleh, Chief Executive Officer of SES, emphasised the consortium’s role in defining a future-ready network that aligns with Europe’s strategic needs. “Being selected as a trusted partner for IRIS² is an honour. The SpaceRISE consortium will develop a space network that supports Europe’s space and defence strategies for years to come. The IRIS² system reflects SES’s commitment to enhancing MEO and LEO capabilities and aligns with the needs set by the European Union,” Al-Saleh said.
