Space Machines Company (SMC), a Sydney-based enterprise focused on satellite support technology, has named Shane Albances as their new Vice President of Engineering. Albances joins SMC as the company ramps up operations to support its MAITRI mission, set for 2026.

Albances brings 24 years of experience in engineering and leadership, previously overseeing manufacturing and global engineering teams at Nanosonics and Cochlear. His role at SMC will involve guiding the engineering team as they work on the technology required for SMC’s satellite “roadside assistance” platform.

From Biomedical to Space Engineering

Albances’ career began with an early fascination with space and engineering, initially planning to study aeronautical engineering. However, he ultimately pursued a degree in Biomedical Engineering, where he developed expertise in multidisciplinary engineering applied to medical devices.

“I’m passionate about engineering and problem-solving and wanted to connect with a company’s mission,” said Albances. “Joining Space Machines Company, I view my role as bridging our current position in the sector with our future aspirations through engineering solutions. The company is pushing boundaries in space technology and the global space ecosystem, which is what drew me to them.”

Supporting SMC’s Mission and Growth

In his new role, Albances will lead SMC’s engineering team through the MAITRI mission, a key component of the company’s planned 2026 milestones. His leadership is expected to enhance the team’s ability to develop and deliver essential technologies for the mission, with a focus on both technical and strategic goals.

Albances aims to create a roadmap for expanding SMC’s technology capabilities. He envisions building on the initial success of the MAITRI mission by integrating additional functionalities to strengthen SMC’s position in the space sector.

CEO Welcomes New Leadership

Rajat Kulshrestha, CEO and Co-Founder of SMC, shared his optimism about Albances’ addition to the team.

“Welcoming Shane to the SMC team has been a pleasure,” said Kulshrestha. “We’re looking forward to seeing Shane’s experience and skills at work, guiding our team as they build and scale valuable satellite technology. We appointed Shane with confidence, knowing that he aligns with the company’s mission and objectives as we focus on advancing our engineering and space capabilities both locally and globally.”

With Albances’ appointment, SMC aims to drive its engineering efforts further, contributing to the company’s overall growth and impact within the space industry.
