Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
Sony has launched its latest addition to the Cinema Line series with the FX2, a compact full-frame camera designed to offer flexibility and cinematic quality for independent filmmakers and small crews.
The FX2 (model ILME-FX2) combines advanced video capabilities with improved usability for both solo operators and collaborative shoots. With features informed by industry feedback, Sony says the new model aims to support a wide range of content creators across film, television, and social media production.
Cinema Look With Photography Options
According to Jun Yoon, Head of Digital Imaging at Sony Australia and New Zealand, the FX2 is designed to “preserve authentic emotion in every shot” while expanding creative options for production teams.
“The FX2 was created based on user feedback and is engineered with unique features to support filmmaking, a new eyepiece and improved usability for versatile production needs,” said Yoon.
Built around a 33.0 megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, the FX2 delivers full-frame cinematic video and high-resolution stills. It offers up to 15 stops of dynamic range when using S-Log3, with Dual Base ISO of 800 and 4000, supporting low-light performance with ISO expansion up to 102400.
The FX2 records in a variety of formats including 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra and supports XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24.00p. It can shoot continuously in 4K 60p for up to 13 hours thanks to an internal cooling system. Variable frame rates allow slow-motion capture at up to 120 fps in Full HD.
Designed For Solo Or Small Crews
Physically, the FX2 retains the compact flat-top layout found in Sony’s FX3 and FX30. It weighs approximately 679 grams and measures 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm. Built-in 1/4-20 UNC mounts allow for cage-free setups and tripod use.
The FX2 introduces a new Real-time Recognition autofocus system that can track people, animals, birds, vehicles, and insects. Autofocus assist tools include breathing compensation and adjustable transition speed and sensitivity.
A new Auto Framing feature automatically crops and tracks subjects, simulating the effect of a moving camera operator, while the Framing Stabiliser maintains composition even while the camera is in motion.
The FX2 also includes Active Mode and Dynamic Active Mode stabilisation, aimed at improving handheld shooting. For stills, a dedicated MOVIE/STILL lever switches modes quickly, and menu settings adapt to the selected function.
Interface And Display Upgrades
The camera comes with a 3.68-million-dot tiltable electronic viewfinder and a vari-angle 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD. Controls are positioned for intuitive use, and a “BIG6” screen offers quick access to frequently used settings like shutter speed, ISO, white balance and LUTs.
Support for vertical shooting includes an updated display layout for 9:16 content. Audio features include two XLR/TRS inputs and a 3.5 mm microphone jack for four-channel, 24-bit digital sound.
Connectivity For Modern Workflows
Connectivity options include HDMI Type-A with up to 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit video out and 16-bit RAW. The FX2 supports dual-band Wi-Fi and wired LAN via adapter for remote shooting and live streaming. A USB Type-C port offers 10Gbps data transfer and supports power delivery.
The camera also allows onboard LUT previews, with support for up to 16 user LUTs, and features Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO modes for varied workflows.
Environmental And Accessibility Features
Sony says the FX2 aligns with its ‘Road to Zero’ sustainability goals. The manufacturing process uses facilities powered entirely by renewable energy.
