Global software company, PTC, has established its first office in Australia, opening a hub on Exhibition Street in central Melbourne as part of a push to expand its Onshape cloud-native CAD and product data management platform across the region.

The office will function as a regional base for customer engagement, technical support and business development. The team will focus on growing Onshape adoption while supporting existing customers looking to modernise their product development processes.

PTC, which is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, employs more than 7,000 people and supports more than 30,000 customers globally. The Melbourne expansion marks its first dedicated presence in Australia or New Zealand.

Cloud demand driving the move

The company attributes the expansion to growing adoption of Onshape across Australia and New Zealand, where manufacturers and product development teams are increasingly shifting to cloud-native platforms.

As organisations in the region modernise their product development workflows to improve collaboration and support distributed teams, PTC identified a need for local expertise on the ground.

General Manager of Onshape and Arena at PTC, David Katzman, commented: “Australia and New Zealand have become important hubs for engineering, advanced manufacturing, and product development, and this expansion reflects PTC’s continued investment in the region.”

“By establishing a local presence, we’re creating a foundation to scale our business, expand our partner ecosystem, and support a new generation of product teams building in the cloud.”

Analyst view

Industry analysts point to broader market trends underpinning the move.

Senior Manager of Industrial Transformation at Verdantix, Josh Graessle, observed: “Australia and New Zealand continue to be attractive markets for cloud-based engineering software as manufacturers modernize product development processes and support increasingly distributed teams.”

“Local expertise combined with cloud-native technology can play an important role in accelerating adoption.”

What Onshape offers

Onshape is a cloud-native computer-aided design and product data management platform. Unlike traditional CAD tools that run as installed desktop software, Onshape operates entirely in the cloud, which PTC positions as an advantage for teams working across multiple locations.

The platform forms part of PTC’s broader portfolio, which the company frames around what it calls the Intelligent Product Lifecycle. The approach is designed to help manufacturers build a product data foundation, extend the value of that data across their operations and accelerate AI-driven transformation.

PTC contends that broader use of product data enables companies to bring products to market faster, manage product complexity and meet regulatory and compliance standards.

Regional hub ambitions

The Melbourne office will serve as PTC’s base for the broader Australia and New Zealand market. The company has flagged plans to expand its partner ecosystem in the region alongside direct customer engagement.

Director of Sales at Onshape and Melbourne hub lead, Kiernan Murray, is heading the local operation, with a focus on both new customer acquisition and supporting organisations already transitioning to cloud-based product development tools.

PTC has indicated it intends to host business intelligence roundtables and customer-focused market discussions from the Melbourne base as it builds out its regional presence.
