PointsBet Selects Grafana Cloud As Unified Observability Platform For Its Betting Infrastructure

ASX-listed wagering operator PointsBet has selected Grafana Cloud as its unified observability platform, consolidating telemetry across its proprietary betting infrastructure and introducing AI-powered tooling to accelerate incident resolution.

The deployment gives PointsBet’s engineering teams a single platform for ingesting and correlating metrics, logs, traces and profiles generated across its real-time odds calculation engine, player account management systems, front-end applications and custom-built betting engine.

Daniel Lucas, Chief Technology Officer at PointsBet, described the platform as central to how the company monitors its product.

“Our platform is our product. Grafana Cloud gives us one place to see everything, and the AI tools to act on it fast,” Lucas noted.

Consolidating telemetry

PointsBet’s betting platform generates high-volume telemetry from multiple sources. Prior to the Grafana Cloud deployment, the company’s observability data was fragmented, which the company says slowed incident response.

Grafana Cloud is built on OpenTelemetry and open-source foundations including Grafana Loki, Grafana Tempo and Prometheus. PointsBet chose the platform in part because the open-source underpinning avoids vendor lock-in while providing a unified view of the technology stack.

The company is using the deployment to shift toward what it calls a service ownership model, where individual engineering teams observe, understand and act on the services they build rather than relying on a centralised operations function.

AI-assisted incident investigation

Grafana Assistant, now generally available in Grafana Cloud, provides PointsBet engineers with an AI-based investigation tool that allows them to query telemetry in natural language, navigate dashboards and trace issues to root cause without requiring deep expertise in PromQL, LogQL or TraceQL.

The tool can run multi-step incident investigations, generate and refine queries during an investigation and surface relevant data within the tools teams already use.

For a business where live betting windows close in seconds, PointsBet frames the reduction in time-to-resolution as an operational necessity rather than an optional improvement.

Saurabh Vyas, Head of SRE at PointsBet, explained the rationale behind the platform choice.

“Observability used to mean drowning in dashboards, alert noise and waiting for someone else to tell you what’s on fire,” Vyas outlined.

“We chose Grafana Cloud because it brings technology and commercial teams together on the single view building autonomous value streams, and Grafana Assistant means our engineers spend less time asking ‘what’s wrong’ and more time fixing it.”

“It enables the shift from reactive firefighting to teams that own their services end to end, and that helps us build a platform our customers can reliably bet on,” he added.

Application-level visibility

Grafana Cloud Application Observability provides PointsBet’s teams with end-to-end visibility into how their services perform. It surfaces service dependency maps, latency hotspots and the customer impact of each change by connecting distributed traces, metrics and logs in a unified view.

The intent is to help teams understand not only that something broke, but why it broke and which users are affected.

Grafana Labs’ perspective

Anthony Woods, Co-Founder of Grafana Labs, described real-time platforms at scale as among the more demanding systems to operate.

“Every component has to perform under pressure, and every signal matters when something goes wrong,” Woods explained.

“PointsBet’s engineering team has built a capable platform, and we’re giving their engineers the observability foundation they need to operate it. Open, AI-powered and built to cut through complexity – that’s what Grafana Cloud is for.”
