PLUS ES and AGL Combine to Expand EV Charging Across NSW

With the introduction of the National Vehicle Emissions Standards (NVES) on 1 January 2025, PLUS ES and AGL have partnered to address the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in New South Wales. The collaboration has launched the first 39 of 149 pole-mounted kerbside EV chargers in Sydney’s inner west, providing a sustainable and accessible solution for urban EV users.

Addressing Urban Charging Challenges

The new chargers, powered by 100 per cent renewable energy through AGL’s GreenPower product, aim to simplify EV ownership for those without access to private off-street parking. With 30 per cent of NSW drivers in this category, some have resorted to risky practices like running extension cords across footpaths or through drain pipes.

“This partnership is an important step towards a cleaner, more accessible future for transportation,” said Rob Amphlett Lewis, Group Executive of Distributed Services at PLUS ES. “By leveraging existing power poles, we can deploy kerbside chargers efficiently, minimising costs and reducing community disruption.”

The chargers are now operational in Birchgrove, Balmain, Lewisham, Stanmore, and Newtown. Charging will be free at all sites until 31 January 2025, providing an incentive for early adopters and encouraging EV uptake.

Reusing Existing Infrastructure

The project claims to demonstrate how existing infrastructure can be repurposed to accelerate a transition to sustainable transport. Pole-mounted chargers reduce the need for dedicated EV parking spaces and lessen the impact on local communities, offering a scalable model for broader implementation.

“We’re providing the hardware that enables customers to access the services offered by their retailer,” Amphlett Lewis added. “This model can serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the state.”

Encouraging EV Adoption

AGL Chief Customer Officer, Jo Egan, highlighted the role of accessible public charging in reducing barriers to EV adoption.

“Public charging availability remains a key factor in encouraging people to purchase EVs. By rolling out these chargers, we aim to provide greater convenience for current EV owners and remove obstacles for future buyers,” Egan said.

The chargers will draw power from renewable sources, ensuring that the energy used is replaced in the grid by clean energy. Egan also pointed to AGL’s broader initiatives to support an energy transition, including its EV subscription model, home charging offers, and EV Night Saver plan.

“Whether or not you’re an AGL customer, we want EV adoption to be simple and accessible.”

A Model for Broader Implementation

The project is backed by a New South Wales Government grant, reflecting the state’s commitment to expanding public EV infrastructure. The kerbside chargers represent a pilot initiative that could inform larger-scale deployments across NSW.

The rollout aligns with a growing focus on sustainable urban development, ensuring that infrastructure keeps pace with the expected surge in EV adoption.

Residents and businesses interested in learning more about the new kerbside charging stations can visit the PLUS ES or AGL websites for further details.
