Payday Super Aligns With CloudPayroll’s Existing Automated Payment Model

CloudPayroll says the federal government’s incoming Payday Super legislation closely mirrors the automated superannuation payment model it has offered employers for several years.

The Melbourne-based cloud payroll provider pointed to its Payday + 1 business day feature, which processes super contributions one business day after each pay run, as evidence that its platform was already built around the principle of timely super payments.

What is Payday Super?

Payday Super is a regulatory change that will require employers to pay superannuation contributions alongside wages, rather than on the current quarterly cycle. The policy is designed to reduce the volume of unpaid and late super, improve visibility for employees and bring super obligations in line with modern payroll expectations.

CloudPayroll argues the reform validates the approach it adopted years ago when it introduced automated payment frequency options for employers.

A model built around timeliness

CloudPayroll developed its automated super payment system to address what it described as longstanding challenges in the payroll and superannuation space, including delayed contributions, administrative complexity and processing errors.

The company’s Payday + 1 business day option automatically calculates and pays super contributions after each pay cycle. CloudPayroll has described the feature as a “set-and-forget” mechanism that removes the need for manual intervention.

Martin Gleeson, Managing Director at CloudPayroll, explained the rationale behind the feature.

“Payday Super validates the approach CloudPayroll has taken for years, treating super as a real-time payroll obligation, not a deferred one,” Gleeson stated.

“Our Payday + 1 business day model was introduced many years ago to reduce risk, improve cashflow management and bring super payments in line with payroll to encourage better payroll discipline.”

Employers report smooth transitions

CloudPayroll pointed to feedback from businesses that have already adopted the Payday + 1 business day payment model.

A manufacturing business using the feature commented: “We like keeping things tight, so it made sense to move to payday plus one business day.”

A tourism operator offered a similar account: “We’ve always paid super monthly rather than quarterly. Switching to payday plus one business day was easy, and we’ve had no issues.”

Billions in unclaimed super

The press toward more frequent super payments comes against the backdrop of a large pool of unclaimed retirement savings. According to CloudPayroll, an estimated $18.9 billion in unclaimed superannuation was held by the ATO as at 30 June 2025.

The company argues that more frequent and timely super payments will help ensure employees receive the contributions they are entitled to, when they are entitled to them. Payday Super is expected to improve visibility over contributions, making it easier for errors to be identified and corrected earlier in the process.

A shift toward real-time accountability

As regulatory expectations around payroll continue to evolve, CloudPayroll has framed both Payday Super and its own Payday + 1 business day approach as part of a broader shift toward real-time payroll accountability.

The company positions the change as one that brings superannuation into line with modern payroll practices, where wages and entitlements are processed and visible in near real-time.
