Ontario’s air ambulance and critical care transport provider, Ornge, has completed a transition to paperless maintenance operations across all of its maintenance bases, deploying Ramco Systems’ Digital Task Card with eSign-off and the Mechanic Anywhere mobile application.
The implementation covers Ornge’s fleet of AW-139 helicopters and PC-12 fixed-wing aircraft, replacing legacy paper-based task cards with a mobile-enabled digital workflow for maintenance execution.
Enterprise aviation software provider, Ramco Systems Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Ramco Systems Limited, carried out the rollout for the Canadian operator, which provides air ambulance and critical care transport services across Ontario.
Replacing Paper-Based Processes
The shift to digital maintenance represents a departure from the manual, paper-driven workflows that have traditionally governed aircraft maintenance task execution. Under the previous system, technicians relied on physical task cards to track and sign off on maintenance work – a process that introduced delays and limited visibility for maintenance managers and quality teams.
Ramco’s eSign-off solution has been built to meet Transport Canada’s sign-off compliance requirements. The platform enables technicians to execute and digitally sign off maintenance tasks in real time, rather than completing paperwork after the fact.
As part of the implementation, Ornge’s existing authored task cards were migrated into an eSign-off-ready format. Work Summary Reports were also introduced to support the organisation’s audit and regulatory compliance obligations.
Mobile Access For Field Technicians
The Mechanic Anywhere mobile application gives Ornge’s technicians the ability to access documentation, carry out maintenance tasks and complete digital sign-offs from any location. The tool is designed to support maintenance crews who operate across multiple bases and need access to task information regardless of where they are working.
The move to digital task cards has also provided Ornge’s maintenance and quality teams with near real-time visibility into work progress, sign-off status and task completion. Compliance tracking has been tightened through standardised work-step execution across the fleet.
Ornge’s Technical Services Manager, Robert Zwanenburg, pointed to the operational benefits of the platform for front-line crews.
“In addition to helping us go paperless, Ramco’s Digital Task Card and Mechanic Anywhere app is well positioned to help us in our efforts to ensure timely maintenance turnaround times,” Zwanenburg commented.
“We are working as a team to ensure our front-line maintenance crews (AMEs) have the tools they need wherever they’re working.”
Building For A Mobile-First Future
The implementation is part of a broader industry shift toward mobile-first, paperless maintenance environments in aviation. For Ornge, whose operations are time-sensitive by nature, the ability to digitise maintenance execution has direct implications for aircraft availability and turnaround times.
Ramco Systems’ Chief Customer Officer – Aviation, Aerospace and Defense, Manoj Kumar Singh, described the go-live as a reflection of ongoing investment in purpose-built tools for the maintenance environment.
“Aviation maintenance is moving toward a mobile-first, paperless future, and Ornge’s achievement is an example of what that looks like in practice,” Singh remarked.
“This go-live reflects years of investment in building AI-powered tools that are purpose-built for the realities of maintenance execution, and for an organisation whose speed is mission-critical, and where precision matters even more.”
