Ookla has launched a certification program designed to give property owners and managers an independent way to prove the quality of their internet networks to tenants and visitors.
The initiative, called Speedtest Certified, applies the company’s testing methodology to venues such as hotels, airports, stadiums and office buildings.
Connectivity As A Selling Point
Reliable connectivity is increasingly considered a core service for commercial and residential properties. Poor performance can impact customer satisfaction and influence tenant or guest decisions.
Stephen Bye, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ookla, said the program aims to remove uncertainty.
“We’ve all felt the frustration of arriving at a hotel, conference, airport or sporting event only to discover that the internet connection is painfully slow,” Bye said. “For years, you’ve trusted Speedtest for your own connectivity. Now, with Speedtest Certified, we’re extending that trust to the places you visit. Our rigorous testing takes the gamble out of finding a reliable network, giving you a seal of approval you can count on.”
How Certification Works
The certification process involves a review of a venue’s enterprise network deployment. Evaluations cover Wi-Fi radio frequency quality, network configuration, security, performance metrics and ISP backhaul.
Properties that pass the assessments receive a Speedtest Certified plaque and access to a digital platform with benchmarking and insights. This allows owners and managers to track performance against other certified venues and implement recommendations.
Industry Positioning
Hamdy Farid, Senior Vice President of Product at Ookla, said the program provides measurable validation in a competitive market.
“Speedtest Certified is the gold standard in network verification,” Farid said. “It provides network owners, commercial real estate developers and managed service providers with the objective metrics needed to validate network investments and stand out in a crowded market. And for the rest of us, it simply eliminates the guesswork, making it easy to find locations with an exceptional and consistent connected experience.”
Market Implications
Analysts note that certification programs can become differentiators in sectors where connectivity is often a deciding factor. Hotels and event venues in particular are expected to see value in demonstrating compliance with independent standards.
The scheme reflects a broader trend of technology companies embedding measurement and certification services into traditional industries.
