Nothing Tech Launches Essential Voice Speech-to-Text Phone App

London-based consumer tech brand Nothing has released Essential Voice, a software feature that converts natural speech into clean, structured written text on its smartphones.

The feature is an extension of Nothing’s Essential AI tools, which are designed to help users capture, find, recall and create content. Essential Voice brings those capabilities to speech input.

Beyond traditional dictation

Nothing is positioning Essential Voice as an alternative to conventional dictation tools, which transcribe speech word-for-word, including filler words, stutters and fragmented sentences.

Essential Voice instead processes spoken input and outputs text that reads as finished writing rather than a raw transcript. The company argues that while typing remains the dominant form of communication on phones, speaking is a more natural mode of expression.

Users can activate Essential Voice by long-pressing the Essential Key or launching it directly from the keyboard. The feature is integrated into the places users already write, meaning they do not need to leave a conversation or app to use it.

Features at launch

The initial release includes several core capabilities. Auto-correction improves clarity and structure while removing filler words. Personal Mappings allow users to create custom voice shortcuts for frequently used words, links, templates and repeated phrases.

A Translation Agent lets users speak in one language and have Essential Voice output text in another. The feature supports more than 100 languages with auto-detection, and users can select preferred regional variants such as Latin American Spanish or Simplified Chinese.

Device availability and future plans

Essential Voice is launching first on the Phone (3) and Phone (4a) Pro, with the Phone (4a) to follow shortly after.

Nothing has outlined plans for future updates that would introduce context awareness, allowing Essential Voice to adapt its output based on where the user is writing – whether in a messaging app, a work email or a search bar.

The company has also indicated it hopes to expand Essential Voice across its broader ecosystem of connected products, describing it as the foundation for a voice-first interface.
