Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
Nokia has signed a 5G expansion agreement with Taiwan Mobile to modernise the Taiwanese operator’s mobile network with AI-driven capabilities, extending a long-standing partnership between the two companies.
Under the deal, Nokia will deploy its AirScale portfolio, including next-generation baseband and radio solutions, alongside AI-powered software to upgrade Taiwan Mobile’s existing 5G infrastructure.
The collaboration is centred on integrating artificial intelligence across multiple layers of the network to improve performance, automate operations, reduce energy consumption and increase resilience.
AI Across Four Domains
The deployment spans four areas where AI is being applied to network operations.
In network intelligence, Nokia will introduce AI-powered software for real-time automation and predictive analytics, including its Predictive Hardware Analytics service and MantaRay SON, a self-organising networks solution that uses AI algorithms to automate operations.
On the infrastructure side, Nokia’s next-generation baseband and radio solutions are designed to increase network capacity and uplink performance to handle traffic profiles generated by AI applications.
For energy management, AI-powered algorithms will enable traffic-aware optimisation and proactive power savings to help Taiwan Mobile reduce energy consumption and meet its ESG targets.
The fourth domain covers network resilience, where AI-enabled self-healing and traffic steering capabilities will allow the network to dynamically adapt to changing conditions and maintain service continuity, including during extreme scenarios.
Capacity And Automation
The agreement will expand 5G capacity through the deployment of advanced radios and next-generation baseband solutions, targeting improved throughput and spectrum efficiency.
The integration of AI-driven network management is intended to enable predictive maintenance, reduce operational complexity and lower total cost of ownership. The upgrades will also support the introduction of new 5G capabilities such as network slicing and RedCap.
Energy Efficiency
Nokia’s hardware combined with AI-driven software is aimed at helping Taiwan Mobile reduce power consumption across its network operations. The operator has an ambition to build a low-carbon, high-efficiency network, and the energy management tools are designed to support that objective.
Vendor And Operator Perspectives
Mark Atkinson, Head of RAN at Nokia, framed the agreement as a step toward AI-native network architecture.
“We are extending our long-standing partnership with Taiwan Mobile, helping accelerate its journey toward AI-native networks,” Atkinson explained. “Our advanced radio and baseband solutions and AI-driven software deliver intelligent automation, enhanced performance and improved energy efficiency, setting the foundation for 5G-Advanced and beyond.”
“The future-ready network enables Taiwan Mobile to deliver increasing volumes of AI traffic, provide new types of services and progress toward its sustainability targets,” he added.
Jamie Lin, President of Taiwan Mobile, positioned the deal within the operator’s broader business strategy.

“Our collaboration with Nokia is a key pillar in our strategy to build a high-performance, resilient and sustainable network that powers our fast growing and ever-expanding Telco+Tech businesses,” Lin remarked.
“By integrating AI across our network for better energy optimisation, resilience and service innovation, we are creating a platform that supports next-generation applications,” he continued. “This long-term partnership enables us to accelerate our position in the AI era and unlock new growth opportunities.”
Broader Context
The deal reflects a wider trend among telecommunications operators seeking to embed AI into network infrastructure as traffic patterns shift. The growth of AI-powered applications and services is placing new demands on mobile networks, particularly around uplink capacity and low-latency connectivity.
For Nokia, the Taiwan Mobile agreement demonstrates continued traction for its AirScale portfolio in the Asia Pacific region as operators prepare their networks for the transition to 5G-Advanced standards.
