NinjaOne Backup Passes 15,000 Customers As Demand Grows For Unified IT Operations

NinjaOne has passed the 15,000 customer mark for its backup product, as IT teams and managed service providers increasingly look for backup and recovery capabilities embedded within their existing IT operations platforms rather than managed as standalone tools.

The growth reflects a broader shift in how organisations approach data protection, with demand rising for platforms that combine endpoint management, backup and recovery in a single console.

The case for embedded backup

The traditional approach to backup has involved dedicated tools that sit outside an organisation’s primary IT management platform. For IT teams already managing endpoints, patching and remote access through one system, running a separate backup workflow adds complexity, context-switching and administrative overhead.

NinjaOne’s approach embeds device backup and SaaS backup directly into its unified IT operations platform. The company’s lightweight agent means every managed device is backup-ready without requiring a separate installation or configuration process.

Alongside device backup, the platform’s SaaS backup protects cloud applications including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra with automated backups, granular recovery and compliance controls.

Matt Hastings, SVP of Product Management at NinjaOne, pointed to the operational burden that standalone backup creates for stretched IT teams.

“IT teams and MSPs have enough on their plates without having to manage backups as a standalone, siloed workflow,” Hastings noted. “NinjaOne Backup gives them time back with faster backups, less storage overhead and simpler compliance. Our customers are already using that time to take on more clients and strategic work.”

A redesigned backup engine

NinjaOne has updated the underlying backup engine with a focus on storage efficiency and speed. The redesigned engine uses less storage than its predecessor, has deduplication visibility built in and delivers faster backup and recovery times.

For MSPs managing backup across dozens or hundreds of client environments, storage costs and backup windows are practical constraints. Reducing the storage footprint per client while speeding up both backup and recovery operations has a direct impact on margins and service quality.

The updated engine is designed to reduce the manual work involved in managing backups, freeing up time for IT teams to focus on other priorities.

AI-driven backup verification

One of the persistent challenges with backup is confidence in recoverability. Organisations regularly discover that backups have failed or are corrupted only when they attempt a restore during an actual incident – the worst possible time to find out.

NinjaOne has introduced a feature called Boot Verify that aims to address this. The tool automatically tests the recoverability of backup images by booting them in a virtual environment and using AI to analyse the outcomes and detect anomalies.

The approach removes the need for manual testing, which is time-consuming and often deprioritised in busy IT environments.

Alex Taguchi, Technology Services Manager at Hawk Ridge Systems, described the practical impact for a lean IT team.

“As a lean IT team, we can’t afford to spend hours managing and validating backups manually,” Taguchi explained. “NinjaOne simplified our device and SaaS backup, freeing up time and resources for more complex work.”

“Now, monitoring, verification and recovery are all in the same platform we already use every day. And knowing that Boot Verify is automatically testing our backups and flagging issues before we need to restore gives us a new level of confidence in our recoverability.”

Compliance controls expanded

The platform has also added features aimed at organisations with regulatory or policy-driven retention requirements. NinjaOne now offers long-term image backup retention options of up to 10 years, along with automated alerts that notify technicians if retention policies are lowered.

Multi-factor authentication is now enforced for high-risk actions in the backup portal, adding a layer of protection against accidental or unauthorised changes to backup configurations.

For organisations in regulated industries or those subject to data retention requirements, having compliance controls built into the same platform used for endpoint management removes the need to manage and audit a separate backup system.

The MSP angle

Managed service providers represent a significant portion of NinjaOne’s customer base, and the backup product’s growth appears closely tied to MSP demand.

For MSPs, backup is both a revenue opportunity and an operational challenge. Offering backup services to clients generates recurring revenue, but managing backup across multiple client environments using standalone tools can be labour-intensive and difficult to scale.

A unified platform that handles endpoint management, patching, remote access and backup in a single console reduces the number of tools an MSP needs to maintain and the amount of time spent switching between them. It also provides a single pane of glass for monitoring backup health across all clients.

A crowded but evolving market

The backup market is well established, with vendors ranging from legacy enterprise players to cloud-native startups. What has changed in recent years is the expectation that backup should not exist in isolation.

IT teams increasingly want backup integrated into the platforms they already use for day-to-day operations, rather than bolted on as a separate product with its own console, its own agent and its own workflow.

NinjaOne’s 15,000 customer milestone for backup suggests that approach is resonating, particularly among the small and mid-market IT teams and MSPs that make up the bulk of its nearly 40,000 total customer base across more than 140 countries.
