NEXTDC has taken its first major step into Japan with the groundbreaking of TK1 Tokyo, a next generation Ai ready data centre positioned in Minato ward beside Tokyo Tower.

The project marks the provider’s entry into one of the world’s busiest cloud and mission critical computing hubs. The facility is scheduled for completion in late 2030 and is designed to serve low latency, high density and automation driven workloads as Japan increases its uptake of Ai and advanced digital services.

A New Foothold In Japan

NEXTDC described TK1 Tokyo as a significant extension of its interconnected footprint. The location places customers at the centre of Japan’s cloud and connectivity ecosystem with secure routes into global platforms.

Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Craig Scroggie, said the move reflects a long term international strategy.

“TK1 Tokyo is a landmark moment for NEXTDC as we extend our sovereign grade platform into one of Asia’s most important digital economies. Its location in central Tokyo, combined with our Tier IV quality design and operations, provides customers with a new Ai ready landing zone at the centre of Japan’s connectivity ecosystem,” Scroggie said.

He added that the project is being delivered with CBRE Investment Management and several global technology partners.

“TK1 Tokyo strengthens our ability to support customers’ growth, resilience and sustainability ambitions across the region.”

Building For High Density Ai Workloads

The Tokyo campus has been planned to carry high performance workloads for hyperscalers, cloud providers, defence users and enterprises that require proximity to major business districts.

The provider drew on its experience running mission critical sites in Australia to shape the design. Fault tolerant systems, redundant power and cooling, advanced security and an operations centre are part of the plan.

Interconnection into NEXTDC’s wider ecosystem across APAC and Australia is a core feature. The company argued that consistent operational standards across markets have become a priority for customers scaling regional deployments.

Part Of A Broader APAC Strategy

TK1 Tokyo forms part of an expansion effort that includes developments such as KL1 Kuala Lumpur as the provider positions itself for rising demand tied to cloud migration, Ai and sovereign infrastructure needs.

Groundbreaking is complete and construction is underway, with operational readiness targeted for late 2030. The facility aims to attract enterprises, government agencies and cloud platforms seeking modernised and secure environments for next generation applications.
