NetApp Partners With Elastio To Embed Ransomware Recovery Verification Into Storage Layer

NetApp and Elastio have announced a partnership that will see Elastio’s recovery verification technology embedded directly into NetApp’s Ransomware Resilience Service, giving enterprises a layered defence against ransomware that extends from production storage into backup and recovery data.

The partnership addresses a specific problem: ransomware that moves quietly through production environments, staying below detection thresholds and reaching backup data before any alert is triggered. When organisations discover their recovery data has been compromised, it is often during an active incident – the point at which clean backups matter most.

Deep file inspection for ONTAP environments

Under the agreement, Elastio’s Provable Recovery Control will be integrated into NetApp’s Ransomware Resilience Service under a “Powered by Elastio” arrangement.

The technology adds deep file inspection of NetApp ONTAP storage copies, scanning for zero-day ransomware, staged malware and stealth corruption that may have evaded perimeter security controls. The system operates without agents and continuously identifies what it describes as the last known clean recovery points.

NetApp’s existing Ransomware Resilience Service detects and contains ransomware at the data layer in real time, takes immutable copies, guides recovery and continuously assesses ransomware posture across ONTAP environments. It includes behavioural detection through NetApp’s Autonomous Ransomware Protection (ARP) capability.

The combined service is intended to deliver end-to-end resilience from ransomware detection through to recovery, using recovery points that have been continuously verified as clean.

Gagan Gulati, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Data Services at NetApp, argued that storage needs to be part of any broader cybersecurity strategy.

“By protecting data where it lives, we make storage a priority to combat cyber threats like ransomware,” Gulati explained.

“But the stakes for business resilience and operational continuity are too high to rely on a single layer of defence. By collaborating with Elastio, we’re giving enterprises another tool to protect their most critical asset: data.”

Closing the recovery gap

The partnership is built around a challenge that both companies say persists across enterprise environments: the gap between having backups and being able to trust those backups during an incident.

Naj Husain, CEO of Elastio, described the problem in direct terms.

“Most organisations discover their recovery data is compromised at the worst possible moment: during an active incident,” Husain outlined.

“By then the question of whether backups are clean is no longer theoretical. The joint solution answers that question continuously, before the incident forces it.”

The integration requires no separate procurement and no architecture changes for existing NetApp customers, according to the companies.

Customer validation

Marc Crudgington, VP of IT Infrastructure and CISO at Crane WW Logistics, pointed to the importance of backup verification during infrastructure migration.

“As we migrated our infrastructure, ensuring we had the right level of backup security and assurance was non-negotiable,” Crudgington commented.

“Elastio provided continuous inspection of our backups from day one – giving us confidence in our ability to recover. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to.”

Availability

The NetApp Ransomware Resilience Service powered by Elastio is planned for availability in the near future, though the companies have not committed to a specific date. Enterprise organisations interested in early access have been directed to contact their NetApp or Elastio representative.
