MetaMask Marks 10 Years With Push Beyond Crypto Wallet Into Broader Financial Platform

Consensys-developed crypto wallet MetaMask has reached its tenth anniversary and is using the milestone to signal a shift from standalone wallet to what the company calls an “Open Money” platform, bringing payments, savings, investing and digital assets into a single consumer product.

The wallet, founded in 2016 by Kumavis and Dan Finlay, started as one of the first self-custodial Ethereum browser wallets. It has since expanded to support Bitcoin, Solana and hundreds of other blockchain networks, accumulating more than 100 million downloads and trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume across approximately 190 countries.

Alongside the anniversary, MetaMask has appointed Gal Eldar as Chief Product Officer to lead the platform expansion.

The Open Money Vision

MetaMask is framing its next phase around what it calls Open Money – a concept for financial services that operate natively on public blockchains, where users hold and control funds directly without intermediaries.

The company points to the growth of stablecoins as validation of this direction. Stablecoin supply has more than doubled over the past three years, surpassing $300 billion in 2026, indicating that meaningful financial value is now moving onchain.

Consensys Co-Founder of Ethereum and Founder and Chief Executive Officer Joe Lubin outlined the company’s ambitions.

“MetaMask spent its first decade redefining what it means to control your own money, helping millions of people access the onchain economy directly and permissionlessly. The next chapter is Open Money, how money works on the internet,” Lubin explained.

“Today’s financial system carries an invisible tax, with intermediaries at every step adding cost without adding value. We’re building the alternative: one platform where anyone, anywhere can manage their money entirely on their own terms. We built the rails. Now we’re rebuilding finance on top of them.”

New Product Leadership

Eldar takes the Chief Product Officer role after previously leading MetaMask teams responsible for expanding the wallet’s functionality. His teams delivered fiat on-ramps, MetaMask Swaps, Bridges, SmartTransactions, Stablecoin Earn and the MetaMask Card. More recently, his teams launched Perps, PredictionMarkets and Money Account.

“People don’t think about wallets or blockchains – they think about what they want to do with their money. And where you’re born shouldn’t decide what you can do with the money you earn,” Eldar commented.

“That’s the idea MetaMask was built on, and it’s what the next ten years are about: making the technology invisible so that whether someone wants to save, spend, invest or access digital assets, it just works. Success won’t be measured by how many people use blockchain. It will be measured by how many people benefit from it without ever having to think about the technology underneath.”

Security Track Record

MetaMask has positioned security as a central part of its platform. In 2025 alone, the wallet’s protections blocked more than 6.5 million malicious website visits and prevented nearly 150,000 malicious transactions, which the company estimates helped users avoid over $500 million in losses.

The platform includes built-in security alerts, frontrun protection, real-time threat monitoring and regular independent security audits.

MetaMask is also building for AI use cases with a new Agent Wallet product, which gives AI agents access to decentralised finance (DeFi) protocols with security controls applied to every transaction by default.

Anniversary Feature

As part of the tenth anniversary, MetaMask has released a feature in its app that lets users review their onchain history. The tool builds a narrative around each user’s activity and generates an Onchain Persona Card that assigns a custom class and level based on their transaction history.

From Browser Extension To Financial Platform

MetaMask’s trajectory mirrors a broader pattern in the crypto industry, where wallet providers are seeking to evolve from single-purpose tools into platforms that can compete with traditional financial services.

The company’s bet is that the combination of its existing user base, multi-chain support and the growing stablecoin market gives it a foundation to offer payments, savings and investment products natively on blockchain infrastructure, without requiring users to interact with the underlying technology directly.

MetaMask is developed by Consensys, an Ethereum software company headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. Further information is available at www.consensys.io.
