Megaport Launches Built-In DDoS Protection That Filters Traffic Inside Its Own Network

ASX-listed networking platform Megaport has launched a DDoS protection capability that filters malicious traffic directly within its own network, rather than routing it through external scrubbing centres or third-party services.

Megaport DDoS Protection is designed as a built-in security feature for Megaport Internet, allowing customers to maintain uptime without introducing additional latency or routing complexity during an attack. The service focuses on Layer 3 and Layer 4 attacks and offers both passive and active mitigation modes.

The Brisbane-headquartered company operates in more than 1,100 enabled locations worldwide.

The problem with existing approaches

Megaport framed the launch around what it sees as shortcomings in traditional DDoS mitigation. Standard ISP solutions, the company argued, often resort to dropping all traffic and taking the service offline to protect the network. External third-party providers, meanwhile, reroute traffic through public infrastructure to scrub it – what Megaport described as a “security detour” that introduces latency and complexity.

Megaport DDoS Protection keeps mitigation inline with the private network path, meaning traffic stays on its intended route without being diverted. The company indicated this maintains performance even while an attack is underway.

CEO positions protection as infrastructure, not an add-on

Michael Reid, CEO at Megaport, described DDoS protection as a core infrastructure requirement rather than an optional layer.

“Network resilience is now a core infrastructure requirement, not an optional extra,” Reid explained. “Moving DDoS protection inside the network layer rather than treating it as a bolt-on service eliminates the traditional trade-offs between security, performance and cost.”

Reid added that users can deploy Megaport Internet in under a minute, with native DDoS protection working to keep digital services available and performing regardless of external threats.

How it works

The service filters traffic at the host and IP level, meaning only malicious traffic is blocked while the rest of the network continues to operate normally. This contrasts with approaches that take entire services offline or redirect all traffic during an attack.

Megaport described the service as fully self-service, deployable through the Megaport Portal in under 60 seconds. Pre-configured protection profiles reduce the need for manual tuning while still distinguishing between legitimate traffic surges and attack patterns.

Pricing tied to connection capacity

Megaport has structured pricing around connection capacity rather than the size or frequency of attacks. The company positioned this as removing the unpredictability of attack-based cost models common with other providers, where costs can spike during large or sustained attacks.
