Lenovo has announced its financial results for the first quarter of the 2024/25 fiscal year, showcasing solid profitability across its business segments and highlighting growth in hybrid Ai opportunities. The Group reported a 20 per cent increase in revenue year-on-year, reaching US$15.4 billion. Net income also saw a jump of 65 per cent, landing at US$315 million. These results were driven by the company’s diversified portfolio and continued focus on innovation.

The company’s shift towards non-PC revenue has also shown progress. Non-PC business now makes up 47 per cent of Lenovo’s total revenue, marking a significant shift in the company’s strategy.

Hybrid Ai Opportunities

The Group is making strides in hybrid Ai with a comprehensive product lineup that includes Ai-enabled devices like Ai PCs and servers supporting various architectures. Lenovo’s Ai PCs, which debuted in May, have received positive feedback from users.

More Ai PC launches are expected at upcoming industry events like IFA and Tech World. Lenovo is optimistic about its ability to capture a significant market share in next-generation Ai PCs, predicting that these devices will account for over 50 per cent of the PC market by 2027.

Research and development spending increased by 6 per cent year-on-year, with the Group investing US$476 million to stay ahead in innovation.

Strategic Collaboration

In May, Lenovo announced a strategic partnership with Alat, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The collaboration includes convertible bonds and a warrants issuance aimed at accelerating Lenovo’s transformation. This partnership is expected to provide financial flexibility and help Lenovo strengthen its supply chain, especially with plans for a new manufacturing hub in the Middle East. These developments are still pending shareholder and regulatory approval.

CEO’s Outlook

Yuanqing Yang, Lenovo’s Chairman and CEO, highlighted the company’s strong performance and future potential. “Our fiscal year has started off strong, thanks to our clear strategy and continued innovation,” Yang said. “We are in a strong position to lead in hybrid Ai, and with the ICT market recovering, we’re confident in our ability to sustain growth.”

Intelligent Devices Group (IDG) Performance

Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group (IDG) saw double-digit revenue growth in Q1, reaching US$11.4 billion. The company maintained its leadership in the PC market, securing a 23 per cent global market share.

Smartphone and tablet sales also contributed to the strong performance, with both segments experiencing approximately 30 per cent revenue growth year-on-year. Premium smartphones were a standout performer, contributing significantly to this growth.

Lenovo’s Ai PCs, initially launched in China, will soon hit global markets, with further launches scheduled for IFA and Tech World. The Group expects Ai PCs to dominate the PC landscape within the next few years.

Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) Expansion

Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) had a record-breaking quarter, generating US$3.2 billion in revenue, a 65 per cent increase year-on-year. This was driven by demand from cloud service providers and an increased focus on Ai workloads. ISG’s Neptune liquid-cooled servers grew by over 50 per cent, highlighting their sustainability benefits.

Lenovo plans to continue improving profitability by simplifying its product portfolios and streamlining operations, particularly for its enterprise and small-to-medium business (SMB) clients.

The company is also deepening partnerships to build hybrid Ai solutions, with ISG positioned to take advantage of growing Ai server and storage demands.

Solutions and Services Group (SSG) Growth

The Solutions and Services Group (SSG) recorded its 13th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, with revenue hitting US$1.9 billion. The operating margin in Q1 was over 20 per cent, solidifying SSG as a critical growth engine for the company.

Managed services and project-based solutions made up 55 per cent of SSG’s revenue, a three-point increase from the previous year. Ai services are expected to be a significant driver of growth, as Lenovo continues to embed Ai capabilities into its Digital Workplace Solutions and Hybrid Cloud offerings.

Corporate Highlights and Leadership Changes

Lenovo was ranked tenth on Gartner’s 2024 Supply Chain Top 25 list, recognizing the company’s efforts in financial performance and corporate social responsibility.

Doug Fisher was appointed as Chief Security and Ai Officer, adding Ai governance to his role. Fisher will oversee Lenovo’s corporate Ai policy and work with its Responsible Ai Committee.

The company also named Dr. Tolga Kurtoglu as the new Chief Technology Officer, succeeding Dr. Yong Rui. Lenovo has established an Emerging Technology Group, led by Dr. Rui, to explore new technologies.

These leadership appointments reflect Lenovo’s commitment to advancing its Ai capabilities and staying competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
