A compact hardware device designed to convert an existing Windows PC or Mac into a network-attached storage system has raised more than AU$233,000 on Kickstarter, surpassing its AU$6,945 funding goal by a factor of more than 30.

The FanX Drive X3, developed by Shenzhen-based storage brand, Fanxiang, connects to a user’s existing computer and pairs with the company’s FanX Cloud software platform to provide remote file access, automatic backup and encrypted sharing across devices.

The campaign has attracted 1,219 backers with 19 days remaining before its deadline of 25 September 2026.

How the device works

The core pitch is straightforward: rather than purchasing a standalone NAS box, users plug the FanX Drive X3 into a PC or Mac they already own. The companion FanX Cloud software then handles remote access, file synchronisation and backup across Windows, macOS, iOS and Android devices.

The device supports the WebDAV protocol, which extends compatibility to smart TVs and other third-party applications.

A remote wake function allows users to power on their host computer from another device, access files, control the desktop remotely and share content from a phone, tablet, laptop or browser.

No subscription model

Fanxiang is positioning the device as a one-time purchase with no recurring cloud storage fees. Users store their data on their own hardware rather than paying monthly for third-party cloud platforms.

The company frames this as an alternative for users who want cloud-like convenience without handing their files over to external service providers.

AI and media management features

The FanX Drive X3 includes AI-powered tools for organising photos and videos. Local AI models, including InsightFace for face detection and CLIP for image understanding and semantic search, run on the user’s own hardware to sort and categorise backed-up media.

A built-in media server can automatically retrieve posters, synopses and ratings for stored movies and play content across devices without additional software.

The device also ships with an app centre offering more than 50 applications covering AI tools, media servers, download stations and productivity software. Docker support is built in, allowing users to deploy open-source applications to customise their setup.

For local AI workloads, the device supports one-click installation of OpenClaw and other tools, enabling users to run AI models on their own hardware.

Cloud-based AI capabilities are powered by, MiniMax, for features such as content understanding and user interaction.

Security and encryption

File sharing is handled through encrypted links using AES-256 encryption. Users can share files, folders, photos, videos and project assets directly from their own storage while maintaining control over access.

The device includes a built-in smart display that shows real-time status information including connectivity, system activity, backup progress and storage usage.

Pricing and availability

The campaign’s featured launch tier at approximately AU$138 per unit has sold out entirely, with 650 backers claiming all available units.

Remaining reward tiers include a super early bird option at approximately AU$152 for a single unit, with 140 of 400 units still available. An early bird tier is priced at approximately AU$166 with 26 of 30 units remaining.

For users who want onboard storage, a 512GB model is available at approximately AU$277 and a 1TB version at approximately AU$388. The company notes that storage-included models still require connection to a host PC and cannot function as standalone NAS devices.

A two-unit bundle is available at approximately AU$277, with 100 of 150 units remaining.

All tiers include free global shipping and a three-year warranty, with estimated delivery in November 2026.

Risks acknowledged

In its Kickstarter disclosure, Fanxiang acknowledges that the project combines hardware, software and remote access features, with challenges including finalising mass production, ensuring stable app performance and maintaining compatibility across different computers, operating systems and network environments.

The company states that core technology and prototypes have been developed but notes that unexpected delays may occur due to component supply, customs clearance or software updates.

The campaign is promoted by, Jellop, an advertising technology firm that claims involvement in more than 8,000 Kickstarter projects.
