TOYO Corporation has purchased a full-stack 20-qubit quantum computer from Finnish company IQM Quantum Computers, making it the first enterprise quantum system deployment in Japan.
The deal will see IQM’s Radiance 20-qubit system delivered to TOYO by the end of 2026. The system will be made available in both on-premises and cloud environments.
Expanding into Asia-Pacific
The deployment marks IQM’s third quantum computer installation in the Asia-Pacific region, following earlier systems deployed in South Korea and Taiwan.
TOYO, a Tokyo-based provider of measurement solutions, plans to operate the quantum computer to support Japanese enterprises and researchers in developing quantum use cases. The company will also work on integrating the system with high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.
A key part of the arrangement involves building the technical workforce that Japan’s national quantum strategy requires.
Japan’s quantum ambitions
Japan maintains one of the largest publicly funded national quantum programs in the world. The country has set targets of 10 million domestic users of quantum technologies and 50 trillion yen in quantum-generated production value by 2030.
Reaching those targets will require more than research programs alone. It demands institutions that own, operate and grow with real quantum hardware.
What the companies are saying
Jan Goetz, CEO and Co-founder of IQM Quantum Computers, pointed to the significance of enterprises taking ownership of quantum infrastructure.
“Leading enterprises are building real quantum capabilities by owning the infrastructure, operating it, and growing with it,” Goetz explained. “TOYO’s commitment to this approach represents an important step in realising Japan’s national quantum strategy based on IQM’s quantum computing technology.”
Toshiya Kohno, Representative Director, President and CEO of TOYO Corporation, framed the purchase in the context of Japan’s manufacturing future.
“Quantum technology is an essential strategic field for future economic growth, especially for the new era of Japanese manufacturing,” Kohno commented. “The competition for practical implementation – such as integration with HPC, use-case development, and business talent development – has already begun, moving beyond theory and research.”
“With the cooperation of IQM, we will promote the social implementation of quantum technologies in Japan ahead of the world,” he added.
