Infoblox’s DNS security has enabled Baidam, an Indigenous Australian cybersecurity firm, to rapidly remove scam websites. The service is being offered through a partnership between the two companies.

The Baidam Takedown Service operates from Baidam’s Gundan Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Brisbane. This centre is the only Indigenous-designed and managed SOC in the country. The goal of the service is to tackle the rising number of scams that have been costing Australians billions every year.

Rapid Response to Scam Websites

Infoblox, a global company known for cloud networking and security services, and Baidam, an Indigenous ICT and cybersecurity provider, announced the launch of the Baidam Takedown Service. This new service is the first in Australia capable of shutting down fraudulent websites and domains within a week, thanks to the power of the Domain Name System (DNS).

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) National Anti-Scam Centre reported that Australians lost $2.74 billion to scams in 2023. These scams, which included investment and identity theft schemes, were often facilitated by fraudulent websites. One of the government’s responses was to empower the Australian Securities and Investments Commission to more effectively identify and remove these scam sites.

Baidam CEO, Jack Reis (pictured), emphasised the growing threat of fraudulent domains, particularly for Indigenous and regional businesses. He noted that while these scams affect all types of organisations, Indigenous businesses may be more vulnerable due to limited experience with internet security. According to the ACCC, First Nations people reported nearly twice the number of scams in 2023 compared with the previous year.

“There are parts of Australia where the internet is very new or not available at all,” Reis said. “It’s a vital resource, but without proper cybersecurity education, Indigenous people and businesses are more at risk.”

Reis added that Baidam, in partnership with Infoblox, is committed to helping organisations maintain a secure online presence and quickly mitigate threats posed by fraudulent websites.

Indigenous-led Cybersecurity

Baidam’s new takedown service is being delivered from its Gundan Security Operations Centre in Brisbane. The centre was designed using an Indigenous co-design methodology and was opened by (then) Minister for Cyber Security Clare O’Neil. Baidam is unique in offering training and pathways for First Nations people to enter leadership roles in cybersecurity.

Infoblox’s DNS security solution plays a critical role in Baidam’s takedown service, allowing for rapid tracking, identification, and removal of fraudulent websites. Many organisations are forced to wait months for action to be taken, but Baidam’s system aims to resolve issues in just days.

Infoblox’s expertise in DNS and threat intelligence, combined with its partnerships with internet service providers, telecommunications companies, and domain administrators, allows the service to act faster than typical responses.

The service also extends to the removal of stolen data, such as credentials and credit card information, from online forums. Baidam’s takedown service can even help to identify malware and remove malicious files from legitimate websites.

Growing Internet Fraud Threat

Scott Morris, Managing Director for Infoblox in Australia and New Zealand, stressed that internet fraud often leads to other types of attacks, such as ransomware. Fake websites and phishing schemes frequently result in stolen credentials, which are then used to launch further attacks on organisations.

“We’re seeing a rise in how internet fraud is being used to infiltrate organisations in Australia,” Morris said. “Our takedown service helps companies stop fraudulent domains that are impersonating them. While blocking malicious domains is important, this service allows companies to take a more proactive approach in protecting their reputation.”

Morris expressed pride in the partnership with Baidam, describing it as an important step towards reducing the risks posed by fraudulent websites.

Tackling Fraud Now

Baidam’s Infoblox-supported Takedown Services are available throughout Australia. Organisations can buy takedown ‘packs’ for use now or in the future when suspicious websites or domains are identified.

The partnership between Infoblox and Baidam highlights the growing need for quick and effective responses to the rising threat of internet fraud in Australia.
