HP has collaborated with Dapto High School students to transform their innovative car design into reality using advanced 3D printing technology. This initiative followed the students’ participation in the 2023 Game Changer Challenge (GCC), where their idea for an accessible vehicle impressed HP, prompting the company to lend its resources and expertise to bring the concept to life.

Turning Vision into Reality

The Year 8 students at Dapto High created a design focused on accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Although their concept didn’t secure an award in the challenge, it caught HP’s attention. Recognising the potential in the students’ idea, HP supported them with their Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printing technology to develop a tangible prototype.

HP representatives, including members of its design staff, worked closely with the students, refining the design at Dapto High. The final product was then 3D printed on an industrial-scale HP printer in Singapore. Last Friday, HP presented the completed prototype to the students and Principal of Dapto High, celebrating a collaboration that links cutting-edge tech with educational opportunity.

A Boost for Education and Innovation

Brad Pulford, Vice President and Managing Director of HP AUNZ, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The next big idea can be born from anywhere and by anyone – that’s what makes innovation so exciting. HP was thrilled to collaborate with Dapto High on this STEM project, which has enabled the students to experience 3D design hands-on.”

Pulford highlighted the partnership’s value in broadening students’ perspectives, adding, “Working with a global company like HP has shown these students what’s possible beyond their regional town.” He emphasised that the initiative is about more than just producing a prototype, explaining that the collaboration has given the students insight into real-world applications of STEM skills.

Education Department Recognises Student Potential

The event, attended by representatives from the NSW Department of Education (DoE), marked the impact that educational programs and industry partnerships can have on students. The Game Changer Challenge, an annual competition sponsored by the DoE, aims to inspire public school students across New South Wales to tackle real-world problems through design thinking. Dapto High’s car project reflects the initiative’s focus on applying classroom knowledge to practical challenges, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world innovation.

HP Multi Jet Fusion: A Catalyst in Digital Manufacturing

HP’s Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) 3D printer, used for the project, has been widely adopted by industry leaders to meet digital manufacturing needs. Known for its precision and scalability, the MJF technology is used by companies such as BMW, Volkswagen, and Nike to drive efficiency and innovation. This project highlights how industry-grade technology can inspire and equip the next generation of innovators, providing Dapto High students with a glimpse of professional-level digital manufacturing processes.

Broader Implications for STEM Education

Brett Salakas, HP Education Ambassador, shared his thoughts on the broader significance of such projects in STEM education. “Projects like these demonstrate to students that STEM is not just a subject but a pathway to real-world solutions,” Salakas said, stressing the importance of providing students with exposure to industry-relevant tools and experiences.

Salakas believes the initiative is a step towards making advanced technology accessible to students, encouraging them to see possibilities beyond conventional classroom learning. He said, “By collaborating with tech companies, schools can offer students a deeper understanding of how STEM skills are applied in industries and the impact they can make.”

The Game Changer Challenge: Fostering Future Thinkers

The Game Changer Challenge, organised by the NSW Department of Education, has grown into an important platform for public school students to engage in design thinking. Each year, the challenge invites students to address complex, “wicked” problems by applying classroom knowledge in innovative ways. For Dapto High, this project not only represented an opportunity to think creatively but also to work on a tangible solution that addresses real-world accessibility needs.

Through this initiative, HP has underscored its commitment to supporting educational programs that foster innovation. The 3D-printed car prototype serves as a testament to what students can achieve when industry and education work together. The successful collaboration between HP, Dapto High, and the DoE exemplifies how technology can inspire young minds and potentially pave the way for the next wave of Australian innovators.
