Hoyts has opened a new premium cinema auditorium at its Karrinyup location in Perth, featuring what the company says is the largest indoor LED cinema screen in the world.
The screen, branded Hoyts Apex, measures 24.9 metres wide by 10.8 metres tall and is powered by more than 24 million pixels. It uses direct-view LED technology rather than traditional projection, which Hoyts says delivers higher brightness, deeper blacks and greater contrast.
The company claims the screen is up to six times brighter than traditional cinema projection, with 300 nit brightness compared to 48 nit in conventional cinemas. It also features a 600,000:1 contrast ratio, a 160-degree viewing angle and support for the DCI-P3 colour gamut and High Dynamic Range.
Sound Through The Screen
One of the notable technical features of the Hoyts Apex installation is that the LED screen is fully acoustically transparent. The panels are micro-perforated, allowing sound to pass directly through the display rather than being projected from speakers positioned around it.
This is paired with Dolby Atmos spatial audio integration.
Damian Keogh, Hoyts Group Chief Executive Officer and President, framed the launch as a significant step for the cinema chain.
“Hoyts Apex represents a defining moment for Hoyts and for cinema more broadly,” Keogh remarked. “At Hoyts Karrinyup, we are proud to introduce the world’s largest LED cinema screen. What truly sets Hoyts APEX apart is how seamlessly the technology comes together.”
“Dolby Atmos surround sound combined with visuals that deliver a sharper, deeper and more lifelike image pulls audiences deeper into the movie.”
Engineering For Consistency
Adam Wrightson, Hoyts Cinema Technology Group IT Director, pointed to the consistency of the viewing experience as a key design goal, noting that the wide viewing angle means image quality should hold up regardless of seat position in the auditorium.
“The LED screen is fully acoustically transparent, allowing sound to pass directly through the movie. This means audio is placed exactly where it should be – on screen – delivering a level of precision and immersion audiences haven’t experienced before,” Wrightson explained.
“At Karrinyup, on a screen of this size, the experience is completely immersive, with every detail of the story amplified by its scale.”
The ultra-thin LED panels used in the installation are as thin as 3mm. The screen also has curved capability, which Hoyts says helps reduce edge distortion and enhance immersion for viewers seated off-centre.
Built For More Than Film
Hoyts has designed the Apex platform to extend beyond traditional film exhibition. The system is built to support evolving content formats, including live events and what the company describes as next-generation cinematic experiences.
That ambition positions Karrinyup as something of a test case for Hoyts’ broader premium strategy, with the venue now serving as a flagship destination within the chain’s network of more than 500 screens and over 59,000 seats across Australia and New Zealand.
Upcoming Releases
The opening of the Hoyts Apex auditorium at Karrinyup coincides with several major film releases. Titles scheduled to screen on the new LED display include Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mortal Kombat II and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
