King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a medical breakthrough by performing the world’s first robotic-assisted implantation of an artificial heart pump, the HeartMate 3. Developed by Abbott, the procedure marks a step forward in medical technology and patient care.

The surgery was conducted on a 35-year-old man who had spent 120 days in hospital due to advanced heart failure, which had also affected his kidney and lung functions. Following the procedure, the patient is set to return home to his family, fulfilling a long-held dream.

Precision-led robotic surgery

The operation was spearheaded by Dr. Feras Khaliel, Head of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the hospital’s Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program. The use of robotic assistance significantly reduced the patient’s time in intensive care to just four days compared to an average of 26 days for similar traditional surgeries.

Dr. Khaliel explained the benefits of the approach.

“The precision and safety provided by robotic-assisted surgery allowed us to achieve a successful outcome with no infections or bleeding during or after the operation,” he said. “The patient was also impressed by the minimal scarring, which highlights the advanced capabilities of this technology.”

Recovery time has also been shortened, with discharge expected within 10 days rather than the 63-day average for conventional interventions.

Advancing healthcare in Saudi Arabia

Dr. Bjorn Zoega, Deputy CEO of KFSHRC, reflected on the broader significance of the achievement.

“This milestone demonstrates our ability to balance bold innovation with rigorous safety measures, delivering advanced medical solutions that expand the possibilities of healthcare,” he said. He added that the accomplishment underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing role in global medical innovation.

Keith Boettiger, Vice President for Abbott’s heart failure business, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaborative effort.

“We are honoured to have partnered with KFSHRC on this transformative initiative,” he said. “This achievement underscores the pivotal role of health technology in improving lives and aligns with Abbott’s commitment to empowering people to live healthier lives.”
