Hampton Capital Asset Management has been selected to participate in the UNSW TRaCE (Translational Research and Commercialisation Experience) Venture Funding Programme. The initiative aims to help startups transition from research labs to commercial success.
The $280 million TRaCE programme is a collaboration between the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the Commonwealth Government, industry partners, and the University of Newcastle. Inspired by models from Israel and Singapore, it combines funding with industry expertise to support startups and address challenges in early-stage growth.
John Priest, Founder and CEO of Hampton Capital, expressed enthusiasm about the selection.
“We are honoured to join the UNSW TRaCE programme,” Priest said. “This opportunity allows us to refine our innovative financial solutions while extending our reach into world-class research, with a strong focus on sustainability and technological advancement.”
Addressing the “Valleys of Death”
A core focus of the TRaCE programme is tackling the “Valleys of Death”—the financial and operational challenges that often hinder startups from reaching market readiness. These hurdles include high development costs and limited market traction, which can deter private investment.
Hampton Capital plans to use TRaCE’s resources to help startups bridge these gaps. With its accelerator arm, Hampton Accelerate, the firm supports ventures by combining cutting-edge technologies with sustainable investment strategies.
“This partnership with TRaCE aligns with our mission to empower startups and reduce the risks associated with early-stage growth,” Priest said.
Leveraging Innovative Partnerships
The TRaCE programme brings together research, funding, and industry partnerships to create a framework that supports startups throughout their journey. One key element is its collaboration with Investible’s $32.7 million Climate Tech Fund, which focuses on scaling early-stage ventures in the climate technology space.
The partnership provides startups with access to co-investment opportunities, enabling them to transition from lab-based innovation to local manufacturing and global deployment.
By combining deep research capabilities with market-driven investment strategies, the programme aims to turn groundbreaking ideas into commercially viable technologies.
A Focus on Sustainability
Hampton Capital’s participation in the TRaCE programme highlights its commitment to sustainable investment practices. The programme’s innovative funding model, which includes a buy-back mechanism, allows TRaCE to reinvest in future startups, creating a long-term pipeline of support.
Over the coming months, Hampton Capital will work closely with the TRaCE team to enhance its market presence and amplify its impact.
“The collaboration between Hampton Capital and the TRaCE programme represents a step forward in commercialising research and fostering sustainable innovation,” Priest said.
Building a Pathway to Commercial Success
The TRaCE programme’s structure provides startups with the resources and guidance they need to overcome common challenges in the innovation lifecycle. By addressing funding gaps and leveraging industry partnerships, the initiative is expected to drive significant advancements in sectors like climate technology and sustainable development.
For Hampton Capital, the partnership reinforces its position as a leader in reshaping the financial sector through innovation and sustainability.
