GoPro has unveiled two new cameras: the $649 HERO13 Black and the $349 HERO, each catering to different user needs while continuing to build on the company’s reputation for rugged, high-quality action cameras.

HERO13 Black: Advanced Features for Power Users

The HERO13 Black is the latest flagship model, designed for those who demand more from their action camera. It introduces several new features aimed at enhancing both creative flexibility and ease of use.

Nicholas Woodman, GoPro Founder and CEO, highlighted the community-driven approach behind the new releases: “This year’s two new GoPro cameras are inspired by and built for the GoPro Community. The HERO13 Black features four new interchangeable lens mods that HERO13 automatically detects and adjusts its settings for, magnetic latch mounting, GPS, and a more powerful battery that provides longer runtimes and improved thermal performance.”

Among the standout features of the HERO13 Black is the ability to capture ultra-slow motion video, with the new 13x Burst Slo-Mo mode offering up to 400 frames per second at HD-quality 720p. The redesigned Enduro battery offers 10 per cent more capacity, extending recording times in various conditions.

The HERO13 Black also introduces a Snap and Go Magnetic Latch Mounting system, which provides three mounting options, including built-in mounting fingers, making it easier to switch between mounts. The addition of WiFi 6 technology allows for 40 per cent faster content transfer speeds.

Customers can choose between the standalone HERO13 Black or the HERO13 Black Creator Edition, which includes the Volta Power Grip, Media Mod, and Light Mod. Preorders are available now, with shipping starting on September 10.

HERO: Compact, Rugged, and Affordable

For those looking for a more compact and straightforward option, the HERO is GoPro’s smallest and lightest 4K camera to date, weighing in at just 86 grams. Despite its size, it retains the rugged build GoPro is known for and is waterproof up to 16 feet.

The HERO is designed for users who want a simple, easy-to-use camera that doesn’t compromise on image quality. It offers Ultra HD 4K video recording, along with 12MP photos and the ability to shoot 2x slow motion video.

“The HERO is the smallest, lightest, simplest to use and lowest cost 4K camera we’ve ever made with a screen,” Woodman said, pointing to its appeal for both new and experienced users.

The camera’s intuitive touch screen and one-button control make it easy to switch between modes and start capturing moments with just a press of a button. The HERO is available for preorder now, with shipping beginning on September 22.

Enhanced Lens Options with HERO13 Black

GoPro has introduced a new range of HB-Series Lenses that are compatible with the HERO13 Black. These lenses are automatically detected by the camera, which adjusts settings based on the lens type and environment.

The four new lenses include:

  • Ultra Wide Lens Mod ($169.95): Offers a 177° field of view with a 1:1 aspect ratio, ideal for POV shots.

  • Macro Lens Mod ($219.95): Provides variable focus, allowing users to capture objects up to 4x closer than with a standard GoPro lens.

  • Anamorphic Lens Mod ($219.95): Delivers ultra wide-angle footage in a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, with in-camera de-squeezing for easier editing.

  • ND Filter 4-Pack ($119.95): Includes filters that allow for cinematic motion blur, with automatic setting adjustments when the filter is attached.

These lenses are available for preorder now, with shipping starting on September 10. The Anamorphic Lens Mod will be available in 2025.

Power Solutions and Mounting Options

The HERO13 Black also benefits from a redesigned battery enclosure that houses a 10 per cent larger capacity 1900mAh Enduro battery. This setup allows for longer recording times, with up to 1.5 hours of continuous recording at the highest resolution settings.

GoPro has introduced new accessories, including the Contacto Magnetic Door and Power Cable Kit ($139.95), which provides a weatherproof connection for external power sources. New mounting options like the Magnetic Latch ($39.95) and Ball Joint Mounts ($64.95) offer quick and secure ways to switch between different mounting setups.

GoPro Quik App Integration

Both HERO13 Black and HERO are compatible with the GoPro Quik app, offering a range of features for editing and sharing content. Users can benefit from automatic highlight videos, easy transferring, and unlimited cloud backup with GoPro’s subscription services.

GoPro’s subscription plans, starting at $69.99 per year, provide access to these features and more, ensuring that users can get the most out of their new cameras.
