Gigabyte has released a new variant of its wood-textured motherboard line with the X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD, an AMD Socket AM5 board that pairs high-end specifications with an aesthetic designed to blend into living spaces rather than sit inside a conventional PC case.
The board follows on from the company’s earlier X870E AERO X3D WOOD model, which drew attention for applying a wood-grain texture to a consumer motherboard. The DARK WOOD edition takes a similar approach with a darker finish that Gigabyte describes as drawing on the grain and depth of dark hardwood.
Design Over Convention
Gigabyte is pitching the X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD as something beyond a standard hardware upgrade. The company has leaned heavily into the idea that motherboards can serve as design pieces within living spaces, not just functional components hidden inside tower cases.
The board features what Gigabyte calls an authentic dark wood texture finish across its surface, complemented by a leather pull tab and dark metal tones. The company frames the design under its “Technology with Warmth” philosophy, positioning the board as a product that prioritises tactile and visual character alongside raw performance.
What Is Under The Surface
Beneath the design treatment, the X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD is a full-featured enthusiast motherboard built on the AMD AM5 platform. It supports AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series processors.
The board includes a digital twin 16+2+2 phase VRM solution for power delivery and supports DDR5 memory overclocking up to 9,000MT/s.
For expansion, the board provides two PCIe 5.0 slots capable of supporting dual graphics cards, along with four M.2 storage slots offering PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 x4 connectivity.
Gigabyte has also incorporated its X3D Turbo Mode 2.0 feature, which the company describes as using AI optimisation to improve performance on AMD’s X3D processors.
An 8-layer back drilling PCB design aims to reduce signal reflections and improve timing accuracy across the board.
Thermal Design
Gigabyte has integrated a multi-component thermal solution into the board, including VRM Thermal Armor Advanced with heat pipes, M.2 Thermal Guard L, M.2 Thermal Guard Ext. and a PCB Thermal Plate.
The company claims the thermal package delivers a 14 per cent thermal improvement over previous designs, while maintaining the visual consistency of the dark wood aesthetic across the board’s surface.
Networking And Connectivity
On the networking front, the X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD includes dual 5GbE LAN ports and Wi-Fi 7 with a directional ultra-high gain antenna.
Connectivity extends to dual USB4 Type-C ports with DisplayPort Alternate Mode and HDMI output, positioning the board for use with high-resolution displays and modern peripherals.
Ease-Of-Use Features
Gigabyte has included several quality-of-life features aimed at simplifying the build process.
DriverBIOS pre-installs Wi-Fi drivers so that networking is available from first boot. The M.2 EZ-Flex system uses a patented flexible baseplate for heat dissipation, while M.2 EZ-Latch Click and Plus offers a screwless quick-release mechanism for installing and removing M.2 drives without tools.

A Niche Within A Niche
The X870E AERO X3D DARK WOOD occupies an unusual position in the motherboard market. While most enthusiast boards compete on specification sheets and RGB lighting, Gigabyte is carving out a segment for buyers who want their hardware to reflect a different design sensibility.
Whether there is a large enough audience for wood-textured motherboards at the enthusiast price point remains to be seen, but Gigabyte appears committed to the concept after the reception of its earlier WOOD model.
