Geotab Secures TCA Type-Approval For GO9B Telematics Device, Expanding Options For Australian Heavy Vehicle Operators

Connected operations and telematics provider Geotab has received type-approval from Transport Certification Australia (TCA) for its GO9B telematics device as a Level 2 assurance device under the National Telematics Framework (NTF).

The approval means eligible Australian heavy vehicle operators can now use either the GO9B or GO9-LTM telematics device to enrol in National Telematics Framework schemes through Geotab’s certified Application Service Provider (ASP) platform.

A second approved device for Australian fleets

The GO9B joins Geotab’s GO9-LTM as a TCA type-approved device under the framework. With both devices now certified, transport operators have greater flexibility in how they deploy approved Geotab hardware across their fleets.

Existing GO9-LTM customers can continue using their current hardware without replacement, while fleets deploying the GO9B now have another government-approved option for accessing Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA) and Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) schemes.

The specific models covered by the approval include the GO9B (Model: GDSAA1, SKUs: GO9-LTEB1TLS and GO9-LTEB2TEN) and the GO9-LTM (SKUs: GO9-LTMTLS and GO9-LTMTENO).

Timing aligns with Heavy Vehicle National Law reforms

The approval comes as Heavy Vehicle National Law reforms take effect, introducing new accreditation requirements for fleet operators. The reforms require operators to comply with new accreditation systems, making access to government-recognised telematics solutions a practical consideration for transport businesses.

The type-approval builds on Geotab’s certification as a TCA Application Service Provider in 2025 and the earlier type-approval of the GO9-LTM device.

What the framework schemes cover

Under the National Telematics Framework, eligible transport operators can use Geotab to enrol in two schemes.

The Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA) supports heavy vehicle access management by monitoring vehicle location, time and identity for approved government schemes, with optional support for vehicle configuration and driver self-declaration. Geotab has indicated that Smart On-Board Mass (Smart OBM) systems support is planned for a future release.

The Road Infrastructure Management (RIM) scheme enables trusted road use data to be collected from enrolled vehicles, helping road managers understand infrastructure utilisation and inform road network planning.

Single-platform compliance and operations

For fleets balancing increasing compliance requirements with operational efficiency, the dual device approval allows operators to manage National Telematics Framework schemes alongside their broader connected operations through a single platform.

The combined type-approval of both the GO9B and GO9-LTM devices, together with Geotab’s ASP certification, provides eligible Australian transport operators with a government-recognised telematics pathway that supports compliance while integrating with wider fleet operations.
