Oracle has announced that four major UK government departments have chosen Oracle Cloud to modernise their corporate services. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA), Ministry of Justice (MoJ), and the Home Office will implement Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications Suite and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) as a unified platform for shared services.
A single platform for efficiency
The Synergy Programme, established to streamline services across these departments, will use Oracle Cloud to standardise processes such as finance, HR, and supply chain management for nearly 250,000 civil servants. The move aims to reduce costs, enhance operational efficiency, and provide better service to UK citizens.
Chris Murtagh, Chief Technology Officer and ERP Programme Director for the Synergy Programme, explained the rationale behind the decision.
“We are building a common operating model and business processes to be used collectively across four departments, which together employ almost half of all UK civil servants. Oracle Cloud will create a single platform that expands insights, increases efficiency, and helps us better meet citizens’ needs,” Murtagh said.
Transforming corporate services
The departments will implement Oracle Fusion Cloud Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Oracle Fusion Cloud Human Capital Management (HCM) including payroll, and Oracle Fusion Cloud Supply Chain & Manufacturing (SCM). These tools are expected to improve productivity, reduce costs, and enhance employee experience.
Oracle Fusion Data Intelligence and OCI will also be integrated to provide advanced analytics capabilities, offering deeper insights to improve decision-making processes. The shared services platform will run in the Oracle Cloud for UK Government & Defence, ensuring security and compliance with national standards.
Pressure to improve efficiency
Siobhan Wilson, Senior Vice President and UK Country Leader at Oracle, highlighted the growing need for government departments to improve operational efficiency.
“Governmental departments face increasing pressure to operate efficiently and cost-effectively. The shift to Oracle Cloud will drive efficiency gains and deliver more value to UK citizens,” Wilson said.
Joint implementation effort
The Synergy Programme’s implementation will be a collaborative effort between the DWP, Oracle, and members of the Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) including IBM and Deloitte. This joint approach is expected to streamline the rollout of the shared services platform and ensure its success across the participating departments.
Oracle Cloud’s adoption by these key government bodies marks a significant step towards modernising the UK’s public sector infrastructure. The transformation will not only benefit civil servants by improving workflows and processes but also aims to deliver enhanced services to the public through better resource management and increased operational efficiency.
