PayPal has confirmed that its Fastlane accelerated checkout service will roll out across Australia, giving merchants a new option to reduce cart abandonment and increase conversion.
The service, which allows customers to complete purchases in as little as one click, is designed to support businesses of all sizes. PayPal said the platform addresses growing consumer frustration with lengthy checkout processes that often lead to abandoned purchases.
Addressing Checkout Friction
Research cited by PayPal shows that 41 per cent of Australian shoppers have abandoned online purchases due to friction at checkout.
Andrew Toon, General Manager Payments at PayPal Australia, said Fastlane is aimed at removing these barriers while supporting business growth.
“For consumers, Fastlane makes online shopping quick, easy, and secure,” Toon said.
“By recognising shoppers and securely pre-filling their information, it removes friction from guest checkout and helps businesses drive increased conversion. With accelerated guest checkout available to businesses of all sizes, Fastlane empowers merchants to boost sales and deliver a faster, more streamlined shopping experience for their customers.”
PayPal said businesses trialling Fastlane have seen an average increase of 51 per cent in conversion rates compared to traditional guest checkout.
How Fastlane Works
The service identifies guest shoppers early in the checkout process using their email address. Shoppers are then verified with a one-time code, which gives access to their stored payment and shipping details.
From there, information is auto-filled to complete purchases with minimal steps, often requiring just a single click.
Fastlane is designed for guest users and does not require a PayPal account. Consumers not recognised by their email can opt in to create a Fastlane profile for future use at participating merchants.
The platform integrates into existing merchant checkout flows, with PayPal’s security and trust underpinning the transaction while maintaining the retailer’s branding.
Merchant Experience
Roy Packer, Partner and Business Development Manager at SuperPharmacyPlus, one of Australia’s largest independent online pharmacies and mobility stores, said his organisation joined the Fastlane trial through BigCommerce.
“Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, so when I heard about Fastlane through BigCommerce, we were eager to be part of the trial,” Packer said.
“Since enabling Fastlane, we’ve seen a 37 per cent increase in checkout speed and a 24 per cent increase in conversion – clear proof that solutions like Fastlane can make a real impact for both our business and our customers.”
Availability
Fastlane by PayPal is currently in merchant trials in Australia and will become generally available in October 2025.
