Telstra and Ericsson have set a new world record for 5G uplink speeds, achieving 447 Mbps on Telstra’s live 5G Standalone (SA) network. The milestone was reached at the Telstra Innovation Centre in Southport, surpassing the previous 340 Mbps record by more than 100 Mbps.

This development marks a significant step for 5G technology, where uplink speeds are critical for applications that require high upload capabilities, such as live streaming and video conferencing. The record was achieved using sub-6GHz frequencies and carrier aggregation, combining 40 MHz of spectrum from both the 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands.

Telstra Wireless Engineering Executive Sri Amirthalingam said the 447 Mbps achievement demonstrated the company’s commitment to enhancing its 5G network for customers.

“Our continued work with Ericsson to push the boundaries of 5G uplink speeds highlights our commitment to providing the best possible network experiences for our customers,” he said. “The 447 Mbps record achieved on our 5G Standalone network at Southport represents a significant leap forward in what is possible with 5G, especially in meeting the increasing demands for faster, more reliable data connections for a wide range of services and industries.”

The improved uplink speed holds particular significance for industries that rely on rapid and reliable data transmission, such as healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing. The ability to handle greater volumes of uploaded data is expected to be key for future applications, especially as demand for services like high-definition video streaming continues to grow.

A Step Toward Ubiquitous 5G

The milestone follows an earlier achievement by Telstra, Ericsson, and Qualcomm, which saw uplink speeds reach 340 Mbps on Telstra’s 5G SA network. This latest breakthrough pushes the limits even further and continues to position Telstra as a leader in 5G deployment.

Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand Emilio Romeo emphasised the importance of these technological advancements in shaping the future of network services.

“The latest achievement is a testament to the strong partnership between Ericsson and Telstra and our shared vision of advancing 5G to its full potential,” Romeo said. “The enhanced uplink capabilities demonstrated by this new world record will enable new applications that require high data throughput and low latency, supporting the demands of industries and consumers alike.”

Telstra aims to move more of its traffic onto the 5G SA network, as it continues to roll out advanced network features that provide more efficient and reliable services. The improved performance is seen as a key step in this transition, particularly in areas where mid-band spectrum is available.

Unlocking Future Possibilities

The collaboration between Ericsson and Telstra aims to continuously optimise network capabilities, supporting innovation and growth across multiple sectors. The focus remains on delivering high-performance, next-generation services that meet the needs of consumers and businesses.

By leveraging their combined expertise, both companies are working to enhance 5G networks and unlock new opportunities in critical sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics. Ericsson’s technology will also enable more intelligent networks, where carriers can be automatically selected to ensure the best customer experience.
