Ericsson and 2degrees, one of New Zealand’s prominent communications service providers, have announced a five-year extension to their existing radio access network (RAN) technology partnership. This new agreement builds on their 2021 collaboration aimed at modernising 2degrees’ network infrastructure.

In the initial 2021 partnership, Ericsson and 2degrees focused on updating the service provider’s RAN network with advanced products and solutions from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio. This included various RAN 3G, 4G, and 5G products, such as AIR, basebands, RAN processors, Ericsson antenna systems, and power systems including lithium-ion batteries. Future technologies, including Generator 4 RAN processors, are also part of the plan.

Under the new terms, Ericsson will continue to accelerate 2degrees’ network modernisation program, with a strong emphasis on nationwide 5G deployment. The partnership will also involve replacing and enhancing 3G and 4G infrastructure at multiple sites.

The expanded project aims to increase capacity and performance across the country, offering improved experiences and services to both consumer and business customers.

Mark Callander, CEO of 2degrees, commented, “This agreement highlights the crucial work we’ve accomplished with Ericsson to deliver a sophisticated mobile network in New Zealand. Ericsson’s technology supports some of the best 5G networks globally. The industry-leading technology we’re implementing will further benefit our customers with the innovative solutions we’ve developed together.”

Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson, New Zealand and Australia, added, “This extension reinforces the robust work Ericsson has done to help 2degrees achieve its vision of being the top-performing network in New Zealand. Our collaboration is transforming the telecommunications landscape and delivering superior customer experience and service for New Zealanders.”

The partnership promises to enhance 2degrees’ network capabilities, bringing advanced connectivity and innovative solutions to users across New Zealand.
