From Watches To Projectors

Although the brand is celebrating its 50th year, the company itself traces its origins back to 1942 when it began as a watch manufacturer. By 1969, it had launched the world’s first commercial quartz watch, laying the groundwork for its reputation in compact, high-precision engineering.

Its first projector, the VPJ-700, arrived in 1989. In 1994, Epson introduced the ELP-3000, a full-colour LCD projector that delivered three times the brightness of previous models. These became widely adopted in corporate settings as PCs and projectors gained traction as presentation tools.

The company continued to expand into new segments throughout the 1990s and 2000s, entering the large-format printer market in 2000 and the digital textile printing sector with the Mona Lisa 160B in 2003. This printer earned recognition for reducing waste and supporting small batch production, particularly in the fashion industry.

Shifting To Ink Tank Printers And Industrial Applications

Epson launched its EcoTank range in 2010, marking a shift toward refillable, high-capacity ink tank printers. These printers have since sold over 100 million units globally, with availability across 170 countries.

The same year, Epson released the SurePress series of digital label presses, targeting industries such as food, beverage and cosmetics. These devices were designed to handle short-run print jobs as product cycles shortened and demand for custom packaging increased.

Epson’s advancements in printhead technology have also played a role in expanding its product lineup. Its PrecisionCore technology, an evolution of the original Micro Piezo system, is used across home, office and industrial print systems. PrecisionCore is now deployed in high-speed linehead inkjet printers that deliver up to 100 pages per minute in enterprise environments.

Growth Through Automation And Robotics

In the early 1980s, Epson developed SCARA robots to support flexible, small-volume manufacturing. These industrial robots remain a core part of Epson’s strategy to streamline production and enhance efficiency.

The company has also invested in automation tools, including CI/CD systems and microservices security, to reinforce its manufacturing processes. These efforts align with its corporate philosophy of developing efficient, compact and precise innovations.

High-Lumen Projectors And New Technologies

In 2016, Epson launched the EB-L25000U, a laser projector with 25,000 lumens of brightness. At the time, it was the world’s brightest 3LCD laser projector, based on company research.

Today, Epson products include home and business printers, large-format systems, projectors and digital manufacturing solutions. The company continues to position itself as a provider of technologies that reduce energy use and environmental impact.
