Epson Launches Two EcoTank Printers For The SOHO Market With Cartridge-Free Design

Epson has released two new printers in its EcoTank range aimed at the small office and home office (SOHO) segment, positioning them as alternatives to entry-level laser printers and traditional cartridge-based inkjet models.

The EcoTank ET-2920 is priced at $479 and the EcoTank ET-4900 at $499. Both are available through www.epson.com.au and retail stores nationwide.

The EcoTank system replaces ink cartridges with high-capacity refillable ink tanks. Both models ship with enough ink to print up to 3,600 black pages and 6,500 colour pages out of the box, which Epson says reduces the need for replacement supplies and can cut printing costs by up to 90 per cent compared to standard cartridge devices.

ET-2920: home office and micro-business

The ET-2920 is the entry-level model in the pair, offering print, scan and copy functions with wireless connectivity.

It prints at 11 pages per minute in black and white and six pages per minute in colour, measured under ISO/IEC 24734 standards. Epson is targeting the printer at home office users, students and freelancers with moderate print volumes.

The cartridge-free design means fewer consumable replacements, which Epson positions as a practical advantage for SOHO users who do not have dedicated IT support.

ET-4900: small business productivity

The ET-4900 (main image) adds a fax function, an automatic document feeder (ADF) for multi-page workflows and Ethernet connectivity alongside Wi-Fi.

Print speeds and included ink yields match the ET-2920. The additional features are aimed at busier SOHO environments where multi-page scanning, document handling and wired network connectivity are required.

The case against cartridges and entry-level laser

Epson is framing the EcoTank range as a cost and maintenance argument against two incumbent categories: entry-level laser printers and traditional cartridge-based inkjet models.

Against laser, Epson points to the avoidance of toner replacements and drum maintenance, lower power consumption and quieter operation, since the EcoTank system does not use heat-based printing. Against cartridge inkjets, the argument centres on a lower cost per page and fewer supply replacements.

The cartridge-free design also reduces plastic waste from discarded cartridges, which Epson highlights as an environmental consideration.

Phil Daidone, Senior Product Manager at Epson Australia, described the two models as a response to frustration among SOHO customers with the cost and maintenance demands of existing printer categories.

“In the SOHO space, customers are increasingly frustrated with the ongoing cost and maintenance associated with both entry-level laser printers and traditional cartridge models,” Daidone explained.

“With EcoTank, we’ve changed that experience, delivering low running costs, fewer interruptions and a simpler, more reliable way to print.”

Daidone added that the two models serve different ends of the SOHO market.

“The ET-2920 is for users who want an easy, low-cost solution for everyday printing, while the ET-4900 adds the productivity features small businesses need to operate more efficiently as they grow. Together, they offer a more economical alternative for today’s hybrid work environment.”

Specifications at a glance

Both models print at 11 pages per minute in black and white and six pages per minute in colour. They ship with enough ink for up to 3,600 black pages and 6,500 colour pages, though Epson notes actual yields will vary based on print settings, content and usage patterns.

The ET-2920 supports wireless connectivity, while the ET-4900 adds Ethernet and includes an ADF and fax capability.

Epson’s worldwide group, led by Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, generates annual sales of more than JPY 1.3 trillion.
