Epson and its subsidiary Epson X Investment Corporation (EXI) have announced an investment in Axelspace Holdings, the parent company of Axelspace Corporation. Axelspace, a startup specialising in the development and manufacturing of microsatellites, received this investment through the EP-GB Investment Limited Partnership, a joint fund.

Axelspace operates under the vision of “Space within Your Reach,” launching its AxelLiner business to develop, manufacture, and operate microsatellites. It also runs AxelGlobe, a service that captures and accumulates Earth observation data, sells satellite imagery, and provides related analysis and consulting services.

The space industry is experiencing significant changes, moving towards rapid commercialisation. New players, primarily venture companies, and innovative business models are emerging in the “new space” sector. This includes solutions that utilise satellite data, high-frequency observation services using microsatellite constellations, on-orbit services, and space resource development. The number of satellites launched globally is expected to double over the next decade, with an increasing reliance on satellite space data and technology.

Axelspace has designed, manufactured, and currently operates nine microsatellites, including four GRUS satellites for its AxelGlobe data service. The company is building expertise in volume production, which is critical for the future expansion of on-orbit services and the use of space data and technology. Axelspace plans to expand its core businesses, focusing on Earth observation and one-stop microsatellite services.

Under its Epson 25 Renewed corporate vision, Epson aims to contribute to developing a smart society through crystal device and semiconductor solutions, leveraging its advanced technologies. The investment in Axelspace aligns with Epson’s goals, as Axelspace has demonstrated competitiveness in the growing space data and technology utilisation market, supported by strong technological capabilities and a solid track record.

Epson’s investment in Axelspace is seen as a strategic move to explore potential synergies with Epson’s sensing devices. The company aims to collaborate with various partners to achieve a sustainable society, utilising its proprietary technologies, products, and services.
