DJI has launched the RS 5, a lightweight commercial gimbal aimed at videographers seeking improved stabilisation, tracking accuracy and battery performance for fast-paced and flexible shoots.

The device, part of the Ronin Series, introduces a series of new features including an upgraded tracking module, redesigned controls and compatibility with an expanded range of mirrorless cameras.

AI-Driven Tracking With Expanded Subject Focus

Central to the RS 5 launch is the updated RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module, which builds on features introduced in the RS 4 Mini.

The new module allows videographers to track people, pets, vehicles and other subjects using the gimbal’s touchscreen interface, even in dynamic or crowded environments. The system can maintain a locked focus on a human subject up to 10 metres away and will reacquire tracking if the subject temporarily leaves the frame.

The module attaches magnetically and requires no additional adapters, allowing quick installation and removal in the field.

DJI said the feature will help reduce setup complexity for solo operators.

Improved Stabilisation For Dynamic Scenes

The RS 5 includes DJI’s fifth-generation RS stabilisation algorithm, delivering a 50 per cent increase in peak motor torque. The company said this provides improved performance in high-movement scenarios such as walking shots, sudden angle changes or vertical footage capture.

Weighing 1.46KG with its battery grip and quick-release plates, the RS 5 supports payloads of up to 3KG. DJI said this makes the gimbal compatible with most popular mirrorless camera and lens combinations.

Vertical shooting can now be enabled without extra accessories, simplifying transitions between landscape and portrait formats for social content and mobile-first workflows.

New Handle And Indicators For Creative Control

The RS 5 introduces an electronic briefcase handle designed for capturing overhead or low-angle shots. It includes joystick and button controls for single-hand operation and aims to reduce wrist fatigue during extended use.

A new on-screen Z-Axis Indicator guides users on how to adjust their walking gait and pace, helping to minimise shake and maintain shot quality.

Faster Charging And Extended Battery Life

DJI has overhauled its charging system for the RS 5, allowing full charging in one hour and increasing energy efficiency by 60 per cent compared to the RS 4.

The standard battery delivers up to 14 hours of runtime. An optional BG70 high-capacity battery grip extends this to 30 hours, reducing downtime during full-day productions.

The gimbal is compatible with a broader range of cameras via Bluetooth shutter control, now supporting Panasonic and Fujifilm models alongside existing Sony, Canon and Nikon support.

Precision Balancing And Ecosystem Integration

Each axis arm on the RS 5 features Teflon-coated fine-tuning knobs to assist in precise camera balancing. The gimbal also includes second-generation automated axis locks that engage or disengage on power up and down, and a third-generation native vertical switch for fast format changes.

The RS 5 integrates with DJI’s broader hardware ecosystem, including Focus Pro Motors, DJI SDR Transmission, and multiple grip and handle accessories.

It also supports the open RS SDK, allowing third-party developers to build custom integrations or expand functionality for specific workflows.
