DJI has released the Osmo Mobile 8P, the latest iteration of its smartphone gimbal line, featuring a new detachable remote control, upgraded subject tracking and Apple DockKit support for iPhone users.
The gimbal is available now from store.dji.com/au and authorised retail partners in Australia, with prices starting at $219 for the Standard Combo.
A detachable remote for framing shots at a distance
The headline addition to the Osmo Mobile 8P is the Osmo FrameTap, a detachable remote that lets creators frame and capture shots without standing behind the phone.
The FrameTap features a small screen that mirrors the view from the connected smartphone or DJI’s Multifunctional Module 2. It includes a joystick for controlling the gimbal’s movement and zoom, along with controls to adjust the brightness and colour temperature of the fill light on the Multifunctional Module 2 across eight levels.
The remote attaches magnetically to the gimbal’s handle and can be removed quickly for use at a distance. DJI is positioning it as a tool for rear-camera selfies and remotely directed shots where the creator needs to see what the camera sees without being next to it.
“The Osmo FrameTap allows creators to take a rear-camera selfie or direct a shot from a distance, ensuring professional results,” DJI outlined in its product announcement.
Upgraded subject tracking
The Osmo Mobile 8P offers several approaches to keeping subjects centred in frame, reflecting the growing demand among content creators for reliable tracking in unpredictable environments.
The updated Multifunctional Module 2 accessory extends tracking beyond people and pets to include general objects such as cars and landmarks. DJI’s ActiveTrack 8.0, available through the DJI Mimo app, is designed to maintain tracking in crowded environments like concerts or sporting events, handling obstructions and fast directional changes.
For iPhone users, the gimbal supports Apple DockKit, which enables subject tracking through the native camera app without requiring DJI’s own software.
“It is especially effective in navigating around obstructions and handling fast shifts,” DJI stated of the ActiveTrack 8.0 system.
Hardware and stabilisation
The Osmo Mobile 8P uses a 3-axis gimbal built on DJI’s eighth-generation stabilisation technology. The unit weighs approximately 386 grams and includes a built-in tripod and a 215mm extension rod.
DJI has updated the tripod design to open wider than previous models for improved stability on uneven surfaces. The gimbal offers up to 10 hours of operating time and includes a built-in USB-C port that can charge a connected phone, a practical addition for extended outdoor filming or live streaming sessions.
Creative shooting modes
The DJI Mimo app includes several cinematic shooting modes designed to automate effects that would otherwise require post-production work.
DynamicZoom produces a stretching and compressing visual effect through Move In and Move Out modes. Slow Shutter captures light trails in low-light conditions. Action Shot is designed to maintain framing on fast-moving subjects such as athletes or dancers. Widescreen mode records directly in 2.35:1 format, removing the need to crop footage in post-production.
The gimbal also supports 360-degree infinite spin for continuous horizontal rotation, which can be combined with the tracking system to follow moving subjects through a full panoramic sweep. A forward-tilting pan axis enables low-angle shots from ground level.
