Contrivian has expanded its Horizon product line with the Horizon Plus, a field-ready communications system designed for military, healthcare, law enforcement and government operations in remote environments.
The San Francisco-based company combines Starlink and other low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite services with multi-carrier 5G/LTE routers and SD-WAN capability in a single deployable package. The system targets remote site operations, disaster response, military deployments and mobile healthcare environments.
How It Works
The Horizon Plus is designed to let emergency responders arrive on foot, deploy in minutes and establish connectivity through the Contrivian platform. It supports always-on connection, remote video monitoring, real-time tracking and telemetry across multi-user field teams.
Grant Kirkwood, CEO at Contrivian, described the system as a step forward for emergency services connectivity.
“Allowing critical teams from construction, remote operations, healthcare, law enforcement, military and governments to connect to satellites for real-time tracking and telemetry, even in the most remote locations,” Kirkwood explained.
“The mix of hardware, software and global connectivity creates a resilient ecosystem that ensures uninterrupted communication when it matters most, empowering responders to operate with greater precision, coordination and confidence in the field.”
Kirkwood is a serial entrepreneur who previously founded Mzima Networks and Unitas Global.
The Horizon Product Line
The Horizon Plus sits within a broader portfolio that Contrivian has structured as a capability ladder across different deployment scenarios.
At the entry level, the Contrivian Horizon Go is an ultra-portable rapid deployment kit aimed at solo responders and small teams. It pairs a Starlink Mini terminal with all-day battery power in a carry-on-sized case and is available as either a hardcase or backpack for walk-in deployment where vehicles cannot reach.
The standard Contrivian Horizon is a ruggedised case built for vehicle-mount and fixed-site deployment. It uses Contrivian’s NorthStar and Lighthouse intelligent path technology for 24/7 monitoring in multi-user field teams.
The Horizon Plus extends this for larger multi-user field operations, while the Contrivian Horizon Pro handles the most demanding deployments.
Intelligent Edge Software
A key element of the system is Contrivian Lighthouse, the company’s intelligent edge software layer that automates network path selection on site.
Tom Daly, Principal Technologist at Contrivian, outlined the role the software plays in keeping responders focused on their work rather than managing connectivity.
“Contrivian Lighthouse is intelligent edge software, a ‘network engineer in a box’ that thinks right on site, so first responders stay focused on their mission, not troubleshooting connectivity,” Daly commented.
“With multiple paths active at once, Contrivian is delivering intelligence designed for optimised performance and fleet-wide visibility.”

The Contrivian NorthStar platform provides centralised visibility and lifecycle management across global deployments, while Lighthouse continuously measures real-world path conditions and selects the optimal route in real time.
Proven In The Field
Contrivian pointed to a real-world deployment during the Palisades fires in Los Angeles, where the kits were used for immediate restoration of command-to-field communications. The deployment supported real-time weather and thermal imaging and worked with existing handsets without requiring changes.
Broader Strategy
The Horizon Plus expansion builds on Contrivian’s strategy to provide mission-critical connectivity that the company describes as accessible, predictable, transparent and resilient across global remote environments.
Contrivian is positioning itself to help organisations modernise connectivity for emergency and disaster response, mobile teams, remote sites and critical infrastructure without adding operational complexity or disruption.
The company unifies fibre, broadband, LTE/5G and LEO satellite into a single multi-modal environment, applying real-time path intelligence to protect application performance.
Contrivian serves public safety, healthcare, energy, financial services and government organisations. It is headquartered in San Francisco and delivers managed connectivity services worldwide.
