Commonwealth Bank has completed a large-scale migration of its data platform to Amazon Web Services, aiming to accelerate its use of Ai across customer and employee channels.

Working with HCLTech, CommBank undertook what it described as one of the largest and fastest data migrations in the Southern Hemisphere. The initiative, which began in July 2024, involved the phased and tested transfer of over 61,000 data pipelines.

Migration To Support Ai Operations

The migration is intended to support CommBank’s growing dependence on Ai systems and data analytics.

Terri Sutherland, CommBank’s Lead for Data Platforms, said the move marks a major step for the bank.

“Migrating our data to the cloud is a significant milestone. Every day, we’re using Ai to make around 55 million decisions intended to benefit our customers and our people,” she said.

“We have over 2,000 Ai models feeding on approximately 157 billion data points, making CommBank one of the largest corporate users of Ai in the country. This initiative enhances our data capabilities and supports our priority to deliver strong digital experiences and technology for our customers.”

AWS Delivers Infrastructure Support

CommBank’s preferred cloud provider, AWS, was central to the transition.

Jamie Simon, Director of Financial Services at AWS Australia and New Zealand, said the partnership reflects an ongoing strategy.

“AWS is pleased to support CommBank as they build an advanced data and Ai platform, using our highest standards in security, compliance and resilience at scale,” Simon said.

“This migration provides the foundation for CommBank to accelerate its use of Ai and agentic Ai to improve customer and employee experiences. Our long-standing collaboration with CommBank demonstrates how Aussie banks are pushing forward in the global digital and Ai economy.”

Data Centres Reduced As Operations Scale

With the transition complete, CommBank expects to simplify its technology architecture, cut its on-premises data centre footprint and better scale services to meet demand.

“Successfully migrating 100 per cent of our data to the cloud allows us to simplify our technology stack and scale operations more flexibly,” Sutherland said.

“The team’s ability to deliver such a large project quickly reinforces the bank’s leadership in this space. Having the right data foundations built on advanced technology enables CBA to unleash its full potential with Ai and agentic Ai.”

CommBank has also been expanding its Ai footprint through initiatives such as the establishment of its Seattle Tech Hub and a strategic partnership with Anthropic focused on generative Ai.
