Canva Launches Connected App For Google Gemini With Editable Design And Brand Tools

Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements

Canva has launched a Connected App for Google Gemini, allowing users of Google’s AI assistant to generate, edit and search Canva designs without leaving the Gemini interface.

The integration, unveiled at Google I/O in Mountain View, California, connects Canva’s design platform and brand management tools directly into Gemini. It also enables users to turn AI-generated images from Google’s Nano Banana model into layered, editable designs using Canva’s Magic Layers AI tool.

The rollout is gradual, starting in select markets in English across all Gemini tiers and all Canva plans.

Completing The AI Assistant Lineup

The Gemini integration follows previous Canva integrations with Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. With the addition of Gemini, Canva now has a presence across all four of the major AI assistants.

Cameron Adams, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Canva, framed the launch as part of the company’s broader strategy.

“You can only experience the true potential of AI when it’s connected to your brand and your context,” Adams stated. “Millions of people turn to Gemini for ideation and research, but they miss that brand, context and design that only Canva brings. Having the full power of Canva’s platform right in Gemini makes it seamless to turn AI-generated content into polished work that’s ready to scale.”

How It Works

To use the integration, Gemini users can type @Canva or connect Canva through Gemini’s app settings. From there, they can generate designs based on the context of their Gemini conversation, then take those designs into Canva for further editing, team collaboration and publishing across platforms.

Designs created through the Gemini integration are fully editable and connected to the user’s Canva Brand Kit, which stores logos, colours, fonts and overall visual identity. The company says 98 per cent of Fortune 500 brands use Canva, and that brand intelligence now travels into the Gemini environment.

Every AI-generated asset carries the user’s brand context, meaning outputs should align with established visual guidelines from the first prompt rather than requiring manual reworking.

Turning AI Images Into Editable Layers

A core feature of the integration is the connection between Google’s Nano Banana image generation model and Canva’s Magic Layers tool.

Magic Layers addresses a common limitation of AI-generated images: they are typically produced as flat, static files that cannot be manually edited without re-prompting from scratch.

Magic Layers analyses the structure of an AI-generated image and separates it into individual, movable elements. Gemini users can create images with Nano Banana, then ask Canva to convert those images into layered designs that can be refined, resized and published.

Adams highlighted the creative possibilities of the combination.

“I’m especially excited to see what our community creates by pairing Nano Banana with Magic Layers – from campaign assets, to surreal storybooks, to eye-popping product imagery,” he explained. “They’re all great examples of how the Canva Design Model is opening up a new dimension of AI-powered design.”

Use Cases

The company is positioning the tool for marketing teams storyboarding campaigns, small businesses updating promotional materials and creators remixing content. The ability to edit individual layers rather than re-prompt entire images is aimed at reducing the time spent iterating on AI-generated visuals.

The integration also allows users to search their existing Canva content from within Gemini, making previously created assets accessible during AI conversations.

Canva’s Scale

Canva now serves more than 265 million people across 190 countries each month. The company describes itself as the third most-used AI platform globally and, according to research by Andreessen Horowitz, the fastest-growing in customer spend on AI products among software companies.

Canva apps, skills and integrations are now available across Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini.

Availability

The Canva Connected App for Google Gemini is rolling out with limited availability initially, with full availability to follow. Users can enable Canva through Gemini’s app settings.
