Introduces new features and support for additional tablets and smartphones.

Blackmagic Design has announced an update to its Blackmagic Camera app for Android. The update also brings new remote control features, allowing users to manage multiple devices from a single interface.

Expanded Device Compatibility

The Blackmagic Camera for Android 2.0 update adds support for Xiaomi Pad 6 and Samsung Tab S9 tablets, as well as Samsung’s S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra smartphones. The update broadens the app’s reach, giving more users access to professional-grade camera controls.

The app, available for free on Google Play, transforms Android devices into digital film cameras. Users can adjust frame rate, shutter angle, white balance, and ISO settings with a single tap. The app also supports recording directly to Blackmagic Cloud in up to 8K resolution.

Remote Control and Multi-View Monitoring

A key addition in this update is the ability to remotely control and monitor multiple Android phones and tablets on the same WiFi network. Users can designate one device as the controller, adjusting settings for all connected Blackmagic Cameras. The update enables simultaneous recording across multiple cameras and offers a multi-view mode for monitoring different angles in real time.

This functionality is useful for multi-camera shoots, allowing users to start and stop recordings on multiple devices at once. It also facilitates collaboration, as footage can be shared instantly with editors through Blackmagic Cloud.

Advanced Capture and Lens Control

The update introduces support for capturing at up to 120 and 240 frames per second on compatible Sony Xperia devices. It also adds compatibility with Tilta Nucleus USB devices, providing additional options for lens control.

Users can shoot in both 16:9 and vertical aspect ratios, with an option to film in landscape while holding the phone vertically. The interface includes media management tools, chat functionality, and access to advanced settings for monitoring, audio, and recording.

Professional Features for Content Creators

The Blackmagic Camera app includes professional monitoring tools such as zebra settings for exposure control, focus assist, frame guides, and 3D LUT support for film-style looks. The media tab allows users to browse, sort, and review clips quickly. Footage can be saved locally, uploaded to Blackmagic Cloud, or synced with DaVinci Resolve projects for immediate editing.

The app records an HD proxy file in addition to the original media, enabling quick uploads for remote editing. With DaVinci Resolve’s multi-source feature, users can view all camera angles in a multi-view setup, streamlining post-production workflows.

Multi-Camera Editing with Sync Bin

The sync bin feature in DaVinci Resolve allows users to align clips from multiple devices using time-of-day timecode. This enables efficient multi-camera editing, making it easier to select the best shots and cutaways. The source overwrite edit mode ensures that selected clips are perfectly synced to the timeline.

Industry Response

Blackmagic Design CEO Grant Petty said expanding support to Android tablets was a frequent request from users.

“Our engineers have been working hard to not only support Android tablets but also add more phone models. It’s exciting to introduce remote control and monitoring at the same time. The larger tablet display makes it ideal for monitoring up to nine cameras in a multi-view,” Petty said.
