Financial operations platform provider, BlackLine, has achieved Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) compliance validation for its PCI Detokenization Service, allowing organisations to automate high-volume payment card reconciliations without exposing sensitive cardholder data.
The validation enables BlackLine’s transaction matching and reconciliation tools to be applied to a broader range of workflows involving payment card information, an area where security requirements have traditionally limited the scope of automation.
The problem with payment card reconciliation
For organisations processing millions of card transactions, even a small percentage of unmatched transactions can generate significant manual work. Security controls designed to protect cardholder information often restrict the data available for automated matching, making it difficult to fully automate reconciliation workflows.
BlackLine’s PCI Detokenization Integration Service is designed to address this gap. It allows authorised users to securely access the payment card information required for matching, while the underlying cardholder data remains within the customer’s own environment.
Combined with BlackLine’s existing high-volume transaction matching capabilities, the service is intended to let organisations automate more of the reconciliation process while maintaining security controls.
Automation without compromising security
The CEO and Chairman of BlackLine, Owen Ryan (pictured), framed the validation as a response to customer demand for deeper automation in complex operational workflows.
“Our customers are asking BlackLine to go deeper into some of their most complex operational workflows, and greater automation cannot come at the expense of security or control,” Ryan stated.
“This validation enables organisations to apply BlackLine’s proven matching and reconciliation capabilities to more of the high-volume, sensitive workflows they manage every day. It expands where we can deliver value while maintaining the security and trust our customers demand.”
Meeting a prerequisite for sensitive workflows
The Chief Information Security Officer at BlackLine, Jill Knesek, pointed to the significance of PCI DSS as a baseline requirement for technology providers operating in payment card environments.
“For organisations managing payment-card information, PCI DSS is an important security standard and, in many environments, a prerequisite for technology providers supporting these workflows,” Knesek explained.
“This validation gives customers independent assurance that BlackLine has cleared that bar, allowing them to extend automation into sensitive financial processes with confidence.”
Applications beyond financial services
While banking and financial services represent a significant portion of the addressable use cases, BlackLine has noted that the validation has relevance across multiple sectors.
Organisations in retail, travel, hospitality and leisure also manage complex financial workflows involving payment card information. The PCI DSS validation broadens the scope of environments where BlackLine can deploy its matching and automation capabilities.
The company characterised the opportunity as extending its platform’s reach across transaction-intensive environments where scale, security and control are central requirements.
