Australia Post is planning a large-scale expansion of its Parcel Locker network over the next five years, after recording a 20 per cent increase in usage over the past year.

The postal operator now has more than two million registered Parcel Locker users nationwide and expanded its network by more than 60 per cent year-on-year. Its broader out-of-home collection network has grown to more than 5,000 collection points across the country, including over 1,500 Parcel Lockers.

The investment reflects shifting consumer expectations as more Australians shop online and seek delivery options that fit around work, family and busy schedules.

Changing consumer habits driving growth

Research conducted by Australia Post found that seven in ten consumers want a range of delivery options at checkout, while almost one in three would switch retailers to access out-of-home delivery options.

Parcel Locker usage for returns has also grown 36 per cent year-on-year, pointing to the increasing role convenience and choice play in the online shopping experience.

Executive General Manager of Parcel, Post and eCommerce Services at Australia Post, Gary Starr, told media the growth in Parcel Locker usage reflects the changing way Australians live, work and shop.

“Australians are looking for delivery options that give them greater flexibility and control, and Parcel Lockers provide a secure and convenient way to collect parcels when it suits them,” he explained.

“As shopping habits continue to evolve, we’re investing in the infrastructure and delivery solutions that help businesses connect with customers across Australia while making it easier for people to access their parcels.”

Where the lockers are going

Australia Post is rolling out Parcel Lockers across a range of high-traffic locations, including post offices, residential precincts, shopping centres and transport hubs. The rollout is being supported through partnerships with some of Australia’s largest retail property groups, bringing more collection options to communities across the country.

The organisation is also evolving its post office network, increasingly adopting parcel-focused formats. These include agency models and dedicated parcel-focused locations known as Post Parcels, designed to meet changing customer needs.

Starr added that the expansion is being driven by sustained demand.

“With more than two million registered users and demand continuing to rise, we’re focused on expanding our Parcel Locker network in convenient locations and strengthening the capacity needed to support Australia’s growing eCommerce economy,” he outlined.

Retailers integrating lockers at checkout

Fashion retailer, Forever New, is among the businesses that have integrated Parcel Lockers directly into their online checkout experience.

Head of Digital and eCommerce at Forever New, Callum Shaw, noted that the integration has driven a measurable shift in customer behaviour.

“Since introducing the Australia Post Parcel Locker widget at checkout, we’ve seen a steady increase in customers choosing Parcel Lockers as their preferred delivery option, particularly among Millennials and customers in inner metropolitan areas,” he remarked.

Shaw added that the integration reduced missed deliveries by 12 per cent.

“The integration was straightforward and has enabled us to offer greater delivery choice. We’ve also seen a reduction in missed deliveries, helping deliver a more convenient, reliable experience and a better overall online shopping experience for our customers,” he observed.

Out-of-home network at scale

Australia Post’s out-of-home network now provides customers with access to more than 5,000 collection points nationwide. The continued expansion of the Parcel Locker network forms a central part of the organisation’s strategy to meet growing eCommerce demand and provide Australians with more control over how and when they receive their parcels.
