Surprisingly Useful AI Article Enhancements
Australian consumers set new benchmarks for online shopping during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales period, driving record parcel volumes and the busiest delivery day in Australia Post’s history.
Parcel volumes rose 6.3 per cent year-on-year, with more than 5.8 million parcels processed in a single day.
$1.5 Billion Spent As Households Go Online
Shoppers spent an estimated $1.5 billion online during the four-day sales event. Around 3.1 million households made purchases, representing a 9.2 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
Australia Post said this made it the most active Cyber sales period to date, with strong growth across a range of categories.
Athleisure saw the biggest increase, up 42 per cent year-on-year. Books and stationery followed with 24.7 per cent growth, while women’s fashion grew 18 per cent. Department store sales also lifted, up 16 per cent compared to last year.
Early Deals Drive November Momentum
While the core Black Friday to Cyber Monday window ran from 28 November, retailers started offering deals earlier to gain an edge. That early activity contributed to higher parcel volumes across the entire month of November, suggesting shoppers are taking a more strategic, value-driven approach in the lead-up to Christmas.
New South Wales accounted for one-third of all eCommerce parcel volumes, while Western Australia recorded the strongest growth at 10.8 per cent year-on-year. Victoria followed with 6.3 per cent growth and Queensland with 6 per cent.
Australia Post Prepares For Christmas Peak
Australia Post Executive General Manager Parcel, Post And eCommerce Services, Gary Starr, said the figures confirmed how embedded the sales period has become in Australian retail behaviour.
“Our latest Quarterly eCommerce report found 50 per cent of shoppers had their sights set on Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, a trend clearly reflected in this record-setting sales period,” Starr said.
“We anticipate this surge to continue well up until Christmas, and to keep up with the demand, Australia Post has been preparing for another record-breaking delivery season.”
To manage the scale, Australia Post has expanded its network, including new post office formats, a national electric delivery vehicle rollout, weekend deliveries and extended trading hours.
“We are ready to deliver the magic this Christmas,” Starr said.
AusPost App And Lockers See Increased Use
Digital engagement also jumped, with the AusPost app recording 14.8 million visits and 2.7 million users, up 28 per cent year-on-year. Parcel tracking remained the most accessed feature.
Use of Parcel Lockers also continues to rise, offering customers secure, free alternatives for receiving deliveries.
