Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) has announced the ROG XBox Ally X20 bundle, a limited-edition gaming handheld built to mark the 20th anniversary of the ROG brand. The device pairs hardware upgrades with a collector-focused design, and ships bundled with a set of AR gaming glasses.
The ROG XBox Ally X20 features a translucent black chassis with a gold internal structure, a nod to the translucent console and handheld designs that were popular in the early 2000s. The see-through shell gives a partial view of the cooling system and AMD silicon underneath.
First OLED Display On The Ally Line
The headline hardware change is the move to an OLED panel. The ROG XBox Ally X20 is the first device in the Ally family to use one.
The screen is a 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR Display running at a 120Hz refresh rate with FreeSync Premium Pro support and 1,400 nits of peak brightness. It carries a VESA DisplayHDR 1000 rating and supports Dolby Vision, with a rated 0.2ms response time.
Asus has fitted the panel with Corning DXC glass and an anti-reflective coating that the company says reduces glare by 65 per cent.
Because OLED panels are more sensitive to heat than traditional LCDs, Asus has redesigned the thermal solution on the X20 to push more airflow directly over the APU and reduce surface temperatures near the display.
Controls And Input Changes
The ROG XBox Ally X20 uses a new set of TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) joysticks, which Asus says deliver more precise tracking than Hall effect sensors while being designed to resist drift over time.
The device also introduces a transforming D-Pad. In its default configuration, it provides standard four-way directional input, but it can be manually reconfigured into an eight-way layout suited to fighting games.
Face buttons have been redesigned to sit flush with the chassis, allowing for smoother thumb movement across buttons. The rear of the handgrips now features a rubberized coating for improved grip during longer sessions.
Processing Power And Software Features
Under the hood, the ROG XBox Ally X20 runs the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor alongside 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage.
The device supports XBox mode for streamlined navigation and gaming, and also provides access to the Auto SR preview feature. Auto SR, previously limited to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, upscales frames rendered at lower resolutions to deliver smoother visuals on larger screens. This is relevant for users who dock the handheld to an external display and want to maintain frame rates without a significant drop in image quality.
Bundled AR Glasses
The ROG XBox Ally X20 ships as a bundle with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses, which connect to the handheld via a single USB Type-C cable.
The glasses project a virtual 171-inch screen at four metres, using a micro-OLED display running at 240Hz with a 0.01ms response time. They cover 95 per cent of the focused field of view.
Native 3DoF (three degrees of freedom) head tracking allows the virtual screen to follow the wearer’s head movements, while an Anchor Mode option locks the display in a fixed position. The glasses feature a black and gold colourway to match the handheld, and integrate with ROG’s Command Center software.
Availability
Asus has not yet confirmed pricing or regional availability for the ROG XBox Ally X20 bundle. The device is being shown at Computex 2026.
