Dr Lisa Su, Chief Executive Officer at AMD, has been named TIME’s CEO of the Year for 2024. The recognition comes as she marks a decade at the company’s helm, having taken on the role in 2014 during AMD’s 55th anniversary year.
Celebrating Leadership and Innovation
TIME’s CEO of the Year award recognises leaders who have made significant contributions to their industries and beyond. Dr Su was honoured for her leadership and AMD’s role in advancing Ai through its comprehensive infrastructure, solutions, and open ecosystem.
Speaking about the achievement, an AMD spokesperson highlighted, “Lisa’s strategic vision has transformed AMD into a powerhouse in the semiconductor industry, setting benchmarks for innovation and growth.”
Transformational Growth Under Dr Su
Since taking the CEO role, Dr Su has overseen AMD’s growth into one of the world’s most valuable technology companies. Under her leadership, AMD’s market capitalisation has surged from $2 billion in 2014 to over $200 billion today.
“Her leadership has fundamentally reshaped AMD’s trajectory,” said a senior industry analyst. “The shift toward data centres, commercial markets, and embedded systems has redefined the company’s market position.”
AMD’s server revenue share has also grown significantly, jumping from just 1 per cent to nearly 34 per cent, largely driven by the success of its EPYC processors. These chips have positioned AMD as a leader in the competitive data centre market.
Breakthroughs in Supercomputing and Ai
AMD’s technologies now power half of the ten fastest and 40 per cent of the ten most energy-efficient supercomputers worldwide. The company has also made strategic acquisitions to bolster its Ai and semiconductor portfolio, including Silo Ai, ZT Systems, Pensando, and Xilinx.
The acquisition of Xilinx in particular, marked as the largest semiconductor deal in history, has been transformative for AMD’s adaptive computing capabilities. The ZT Systems acquisition, expected to close in early 2025, further strengthens AMD’s position in Ai infrastructure for hyperscalers.
Commitment to Research and Development
Dr Su has championed a significant increase in research and development spending at AMD. Annual R&D investments have grown from $1 billion in 2014 to $5.9 billion in 2023. Over the past year alone, AMD has invested over $1 billion to expand its Ai ecosystem and enhance its software capabilities.
“Lisa understands the importance of sustained investment in R&D to stay ahead in a fast-moving industry,” commented a tech industry expert. “It’s a clear demonstration of her long-term vision.”
A Career Dedicated to Innovation
Born in Taiwan and raised in the US, Dr Su earned three degrees from MIT, including a PhD. Before joining AMD in 2012, she spent 13 years at IBM in engineering and leadership roles. Throughout her career, Dr Su has been recognised as a pioneer in the semiconductor sector, with a focus on innovative chip design.
Industry Recognition
TIME’s feature on Dr Su highlights her achievements, describing her leadership as pivotal in AMD’s evolution. The recognition also underlines AMD’s role in shaping the future of Ai and semiconductor technology.
